Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2021-05-16
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | It is three pm and it is time to start! [Carl then hits the wrong button on his screen and teleports out.] |
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Weird. I teleported. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Did the set vanish? |
15:01 | Sandie Harbour | Probably that loose nut on the keyboard |
15:01 | Gronk Seriman | I still see the set. |
15:01 | Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) | Kara2016 gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. [I missed that, but thank you Kara.] |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. I see it now. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:02 | Sandy Burgess thinks he must have practiced that sentence in front of a mirror
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | So lets start. Andrea is not here right now, so we will skip her announcements and move right into Q&A |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | So. Questions? |
15:03 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | How many suitors Sandie have to dodge per day? :-) |
15:03 | Sandy Burgess | I think I know one... |
15:03 | Sandie Harbour | I know that answer. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Few, as she can used "Eject" on the land. |
15:04 | Kara2016 | smiles brightly. |
15:04 | Agatha Macbeth | 42 |
15:04 | Sandie Harbour | 0 |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | I hope we do have some questions. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Hi Larky |
15:04 | Larky (larkylouz) | Hi Carl, hey everyone. |
15:05 | Agatha Macbeth | Hello Larky |
15:05 | Sandie Harbour | Raises hand. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | I noticed that NCI had combined their Q&As with a Trivia event. I wonder if they were having problems getting questions some nights. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | I may have to dig out my trivia database. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, huge Excel file. |
15:06 | Sandie Harbour | Is there a huge advantage to Baked on Mesh? |
15:07 | Larky (larkylouz) | I like it, Sandie. I can wear my usual look AND my clothes fit. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | It has allowed many designers to use tattoos, make-up, and other things without having to use the additional complexity of mesh body "onion skin" layers. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Also, it allows people to use some old system clothing and skins. |
15:07 | Agatha Macbeth nods.
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Though the skins don't work well as the feet are not compatible. |
15:07 | lovejoy2199 | Ummmmm. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | But if you are always wearing shoes, that might not be an issue. |
15:07 | Agatha Macbeth | Its chief attraction. |
15:08 | Sandie Harbour | looks at her feet. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | If you don't have a mesh body, you don't need to worry about it. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. Sandie's feet are the main issue with using old skins and BoM. |
15:09 | Larky (larkylouz) | I have the free sweets body and while I look too thin, with this shape, the color isn't an issue for me. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | SL's system avatar did not actually have individual toes. |
15:09 | lovejoy2199 | So, baked on is for people who have mesh bobies? [He meant "bodies"] |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Right. Only for mesh bodies. And even for them it is optional. |
15:10 | Larky (larkylouz) | Lovejoy, you don't want to know how I misread your question... |
15:10 | Larky (larkylouz) | ;^) |
15:10 | Gronk Seriman | Last time I tried, if I use any materials or shininess on my BoM avatar, it showed up on the old system clothes, also. It was a mess. |
15:10 | Larky (larkylouz) | Hi Jorge. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | I was not aware of that. Something to look out for Gronk. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | I still have an old style system body. So I don't know all the details. |
15:11 | Sandie Harbour | I'm trying it out for the first time. |
15:12 | Sandy Burgess | You need to switch on BOM on the mesh body. |
15:12 | Gronk Seriman | "Switch on"? |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. My understanding is that most mesh bodies come with a HUD that allows you to put the body into BoM mode. |
15:13 | Sandie Harbour | My HUD has a button to turn it on. |
15:13 | Gronk Seriman | Oh! |
15:13 | Gronk Seriman | I will have to look, then. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Otherwise, it does not know to look to the BoM code for skin and clothes and make up and tattoos, etc. |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't know if all of them work that way. It is possible some have it on by default. |
15:14 | Sandy Burgess | Mine too... you need to find it... these HUDs are small reading… |
15:15 | Larky (larkylouz) | mine's on by default |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Let's move on to the next question. |
15:15 | Strandwind raises her hand.
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | Go Strandwind! |
15:15 | Strandwind | I still have a problem. I bought some new textures. They are full perm. I got them in my inventory. Normaly, if I apply a texture from my inventory to a prim and I go to texture tab in edit menu, the menu shows the applied texture in my inventory. But that doesn't work now. I don't know why. Anyone has a clue why and how I can fix it? |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | What SL client are you using? |
15:16 | Strandwind | Client? |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | Browser/Program/Ap, etc. |
15:16 | Strandwind | Firestorm |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Let me see if I can replicate that problem. [Carl rezes a prim and tests with a full perm texture from Inventory.] |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | First thing I would ask is that you look at those textures and confirm they are full perm. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | Right click on one of them in your inventory and select properties |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | Then look to make sure that "Copy" "Modify" and "Transfer" are all checked |
15:18 | Gronk Seriman | If they are "No Copy", they would disappear from the list since you used your one copy. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | I just confirmed that on my Firestorm client, that texture application is working as expected. |
15:18 | Strandwind | I shared the texture to my beloved partner. She does not have that problem. So it seems that it is an issue in my preferences. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. I would check to see if some of those textures are not set right. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Is it a texture you can pass a copy to me to look at? |
15:19 | Strandwind | Yes, moment. |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you. |
15:20 | Carl Metropolitan | SL does, for no good reason, just acts weird from time to time. |
15:20 | Gronk Seriman | I have also learned the hard way to look at what the NEXT user of your gift can do. You may have given away the full perm, and keep a restricted copy. |
15:21 | Strandwind | Aye, as I said, my beloved partner had no problems with it, but my SL is behaving wonky with it. [Carl rezes a cube and apply Strandwind's texture.] |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | It works for me. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | Have you tried restarting SL since this happened? |
15:21 | Strandwind | Yes, I did. |
15:21 | Gronk Seriman | Carl, if you check the permissions and give it back to her, would it work? |
15:21 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Computer restart? |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | I will do that |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | I checked permissions and they were correct. |
15:22 | Strandwind nods.
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | Try and see if this version I sent you back does the same thing. |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | It is possible that one UUID (asset ID) got corrupted. [Different copies of the same asset have different UUIDs.] |
15:23 | Strandwind | Ok, thank you Carl, I will try that. |
15:23 | Strandwind | If it does not work, I may come back with this issue next week. |
15:23 | Strandwind smiles
15:24 | Carl Metropolitan | It is baffling. I can't think of a reason that the texture you gave me a copy of would not work. |
15:25 | Gronk Seriman | "Welcome to Second Life! More flakes than Kellog's! More bugs than Orkin!" |
15:25 | Strandwind | I will try it at home. Thank you. |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? |
15:25 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand.
15:26 | Agatha Macbeth | A friend of mine said the other day she was wearing two different skins at the same time...is that even possible? |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | It is sort of. |
15:26 | Agatha Macbeth | Ah. Really? |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | If she's wearing a system skin and a mesh skin and is not wearing a full body alpha over the system skin, it can look weird and patchy with the system skin bits popping out over the mesh body skin layer. |
15:27 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | One can accidentally wear all the saved outfits at the same time... |
15:27 | Sandy Burgess nods. Have done that... feels itchy.
15:27 | Agatha Macbeth | Right. Thanks. |
15:28 | Gronk Seriman | I have heard recently that SL and LL has been sold to an investment group. Is that a good thing? |
15:29 | Agatha Macbeth | Hello Phrynne. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | The sale was completed about two months ago. |
15:29 | Sandy Burgess | Investment groups never a are a good thing. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Is it a good thing? Who knows. The investment group will need to keep SL operating and profitable. That's a good thing. |
15:30 | Gronk Seriman | Sandy, I suppose it depends on what the investment group wants to do with the asset they just bought. |
15:30 | lovejoy2199 | Or, sell it off in pieces. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | They bought only SL [and Tillia] , so unlike LL, they are not chasing the next shiny |
15:30 | Agatha Macbeth | Hello Andrea. |
15:31 | lovejoy2199 | All about money for them. |
15:31 | Sandy Burgess | They usually are not interested in the product itself but in the money they can make of it. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | There really are no pieces of SL to sell off, Lovejoy. I suppose they could sell Tillia or SL separately. |
15:31 | Gronk Seriman | Oh, really?! What does LL have left?! |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Nothing; LL was what was sold. |
15:31 | Strandwind | Have you lately uploaded something? |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello Andrea. |
15:31 | Strandwind | It is shown, that the price could alter. |
15:32 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | It was not sold as much as acquired. LL and SL as a whole. |
15:32 | Gronk Seriman smiles and waves to Andrea.
15:32 | Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) | Soup Jonson gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. [Sorry I missed that; Thank you Soup.] |
15:32 | Strandwind | And I have heard there could be a kind of premium membership. Not know what that would cause, but sure more to pay. |
15:32 | Phrynne | Beyond the current premium level? |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Keep in mind that the owners of SL don't make any money directly from fees charged in L$. All buying L$s does is allow LL to issue new ones to sell. |
15:33 | Strandwind | Yes, beyond premium membership. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | A second tier of premium membership, Premium Plus has been in the works before LL was sold. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | It is still in the works. |
15:33 | Gronk Seriman | Oh wow. |
15:34 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | They would probably have to invent new services for the extra level of premium. |
15:34 | Gronk Seriman | So your name appears in gold. Heh! |
15:34 | Strandwind | Thank you Carl, "Premium plus", that's what I heard about. |
15:34 | Sandy Burgess | If they make sim crossings work I'll be quiet and not complain about investment groups |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Agatha, here is an article Larky wrote several years ago that indirectly addresses your previous question: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/guardian/2014/08/02/avatars-reload/ |
15:35 | Agatha Macbeth | Thanks Carl. |
15:35 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | The originals investors cashed in and new investors took over. |
15:35 | Larky (larkylouz) | I haven't seen the issue described in that article in years, however, but it used to be fairly common. |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | I think the original investors were expecting everyone to leave SL for Sansar, and when that did not happen, they decided to get out. |
15:35 | Kara2016 | I am glad i did not go premium.. |
15:36 | Phrynne | If Sansar had let in Mac users, I might've gone. As it is, no. |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Sansar had many problems that reflected the fact that the people designing it did not get Second Life. |
15:37 | Phrynne | They had no clue. |
15:37 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Sansar required kind of heavy duty equipment to use. |
15:37 | Gronk Seriman | If LL could have magically shifted their opening to the peak of the goggle craze, they would have been in much better shape. They missed the peak badly. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | They only tried to attach Sansar to the VR trend after that trend was starting to peak. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | Andrea, do you have any announcements tonight? |
15:39 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | We will be having a dance next Sunday. Theme will be Gods and Monsters. |
15:39 | Gronk Seriman | Ooo! |
15:39 | Soup Jonson | Yes love your dances! |
15:39 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Not sure about the build yet. I'm at Sci-Fi Con this week. |
15:39 | Larky (larkylouz) | I got a snarky newbie the other day who found it necessary to tell me how boring the game SL is and how much better VR is. He wasn't interested in listening to my statement that this isn't a game, naturally. |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | He is clearly not a good fit for SL. Like any platform, it is not for everyone. |
15:41 | Larky (larkylouz) | He probably needed to grow out of his acne before anything was a good fit for them. Just sayin'! |
15:41 | Gronk Seriman | Larky, that's why SL is such a hard sell. So many people just don't "Get It". |
15:42 | Larky (larkylouz) | I always get a small thrill when I start explaining SL and they keep saying, "Wow, that's so cooool!" |
15:42 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Some people expect SL to be multiplayer game. |
15:42 | Carl Metropolitan | One of the first things I tried to do when I created the original Oxbridge tutorial was explain what SL was in the first few panels. |
15:43 | Gronk Seriman | And, to be sure, almost any type of "game" you can think of is here. You just need to go find it. Nobody knows all of SL. |
15:43 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? |
15:44 | Sandy Burgess | SL is not a game its a toy... like Lego. |
15:44 | Phrynne | SL is a world. |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | If there are no other questions tonight, I'm going to adjourn and go make the transcript. |
15:45 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Thank you for coming. |
15:46 | Larky (larkylouz) | Thank you, Carl, Andrea. Take care, all. |
15:46 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you Carl, Andrea! |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | Goodnight everyone. |
15:46 | Sandy Burgess | Good night. |
15:46 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Bedtime. Hold the fort. |
15:46 | Soup Jonson | Fun meeting. |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you all for coming. |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | Bye! |
15:46 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Bye. |
