15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is 3 PM, SL Time, and it is time to start. |
15:00 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
Greetings all :) |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope we have some questions today :) |
15:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
that would be nice. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. Where did Andrea go? |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, if she gets back, she can make announcements. |
15:01 |
TomSTomson |
Is that the first question? |
15:01 |
Ember (emberell) |
She may have crashed |
15:02 |
Ember (emberell) |
Welcome back, Andrea |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. The questions only count if someone other than myself asks them :) |
15:02 |
TomSTomson |
Oh, okay. |
15:02 |
lovejoy2199 |
And, there is the answer. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome back Andrea. Do you want to make any announcements? |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
back |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
waves at fellow time lord Agatha. |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Oh hi Ember, Gronk, Badger. |
15:05 |
Agatha Macbeth |
WB :) |
15:05 |
badgerofzen |
hullo andrea |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Andrea, do you have any announcements, or should I go right into questions? |
15:06 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Hi Sandie. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's open the floor for questions. |
15:06 |
Sandie Harbour |
Hi :) |
15:06 |
lovejoy2199 |
Where can I find info on creating new avatars? Both bots, and new accounts? |
15:06 |
|
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) waves to Sandie :) |
15:07 |
lovejoy2199 |
Hello good looking. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To create a new account, you need to just use the same process you did for your original account. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just sign up on the SL webpage. |
15:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
How many suitors would Sandie's smile charm? :-) |
15:08 |
|
Gronk Seriman smiles and waves to Sandie! |
15:08 |
lovejoy2199 |
Ok. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There used to be a limited number of accounts you could have per email address, but I think that's no longer the case. |
15:08 |
Ember (emberell) |
It used to be five avatars per address, though I'm not sure if/when that changed |
15:08 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Lots of people have multiple free email addresses. |
15:08 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I use a different e-mail per account. I make yahoo ones. Though they do have a limit |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you are creating an account that's a bot, you need to follow LL's Scripted Agent policy: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Scripted_Agent_Status |
15:09 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Interesting |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Which includes identifying the bot as such to LL. |
15:09 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I never knew that. Never made a bot though, something to think about |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I used to make tons of alts. |
15:10 |
Ember (emberell) |
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Bot does have a bit other guidance on what bots can do and setting them up. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
When I ran NCI I would use them to be "mystery newbies" to check that people were being helpful to newbies when I was not around watching. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And I made a few that were just there to be funny; like "Karl Neopolian" |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Tank you Ember |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's helpful. |
15:12 |
Sandie Harbour |
I always wanted to make a male avatar and name him Oliver Sudden |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So it is uncertain if there is still a limit of SL accounts per Email account. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm afraid I don't get the joke, Sandie. Please assume I'm dumb and explain it? |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. Wait. I get it now. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
All of a sudden = Oliver Sudden. Never mind. |
15:14 |
Sandie Harbour |
I knew you were a smart guy Carl |
15:14 |
Gronk Seriman |
I've seen Shouten Haller around Caledon a few times. |
15:14 |
Ember (emberell) |
The most recent information I can find is from 2017, saying there's a soft limit of 5 (but one may be able to get more without much pushback from LL)... |
15:14 |
Ember (emberell) |
But posted as a community answer, so take it with a grain of salt |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let's move on to the next question. |
15:15 |
lovejoy2199 |
Just like 'Olive' is the 10th reindeer. |
15:15 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Does Popeye know about this? |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question? |
15:18 |
Gronk Seriman |
You might discuss the question Lovejoy had before we started. It was an interesting one. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As to whether anyone offered advanced classes in the SL Client interface like Firestorm offers in its client? |
15:19 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes. |
15:19 |
|
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) smiles :) |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know that most of the classes offered here at Oxbridge assume the SL client as a base, but I don't know of any place that offers specific classes on the SL Client other than what is taught in the various orientation walks, such as we have here at Oxbridge. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And of course the SL wiki is written based on the SL Client. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's a huge resource. |
15:22 |
Sandie Harbour |
I've written there articles there. |
15:22 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:Help/Viewer |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Fringe, thank you. That's an excellent resource. |
15:22 |
|
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) nods :) |
15:23 |
Gronk Seriman |
And SL doesn't offer known instant chat-based help like Firestorm does. |
15:23 |
lovejoy2199 |
Oh??? |
15:23 |
Gronk Seriman |
If I'm wrong, I'd like to know. |
15:23 |
Sandie Harbour |
I think mine were in the LSL Wiki. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. That is left up to groups like COUG [Caledon Oxbridge University Group]. |
15:24 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
Firestorm Support English; they tend to be very helpful. |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Part of the problem is most people who are helpers in SL tend to use Firestorm. |
15:25 |
|
Gronk Seriman is guilty. |
15:25 |
Ember (emberell) |
I use both, so I can help students who use both. |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I used to use Kokua as well but it stopped working for my computer. |
15:26 |
Ember (emberell) |
Though many things you can do with an option in Firestorm need to be done with the advanced menu. |
15:26 |
Ember (emberell) |
So I may recommend just carefully studying the wikis on advanced menu options |
15:26 |
Gronk Seriman |
I try to keep both SL and Firestorm viewers up to date, but since I prefer Firestorm so much, the SL viewer atrophies. |
15:27 |
Agatha Macbeth |
The only time I use the LL viewer is a) to change a profile pic or b) in an uber-laggy club when Firestorm keeps crashing... |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you are helping someone, it always is a good idea to start by asking what viewer they are using. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Does Firestorm not do profile photos right? |
15:27 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Not for free I don't think. Maybe I'm wrong. |
15:28 |
Ember (emberell) |
You can always do profile photos for free from the website, too. |
15:28 |
Ember (emberell) |
That's how I've always updated mine. |
15:28 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
when I ask which viewer, I am often faced with an answer like, "What is a viewer?" |
15:28 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Good to know. |
15:28 |
Ember (emberell) |
For more info on the SL viewer advanced menu: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Advanced_menu/1.23/1.23 |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's move on to other questions, assuming we have any. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are there any other questions? |
15:31 |
Gronk Seriman |
Why do we drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway? |
15:31 |
TomSTomson |
I went to a Wild West site I found on Search, and they threw me out. Happened twice, so it wasn't a fluke. Why is that? |
15:31 |
Ember (emberell) |
You may need to ask the administration there, Tom. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is probably because your account is two days old. |
15:32 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Might have been one of those places with very strict rules of attire. |
15:32 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
Many sims have a lower age limit. |
15:32 |
Ember (emberell) |
Ah, that may do it though. Some places in SL filter based on avatar age - below 30 or so often aren't allowed in some places. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Many places filter out very young accounts in an effort to keep out throwaway accounts used by griefers. |
15:32 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yeah, to avoid throwaway accounts |
15:32 |
TomSTomson |
oh. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's not fair, as most dedicated griefers know to let an account age first. |
15:33 |
TomSTomson |
So I just keep trying until they don't throw me out? |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Some roleplay sims just don't want to deal with new users. |
15:33 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
That could get you banned. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can you tell me the name of the place, and I will go look at it. |
15:33 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I would try to find out why. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't want you to get banned as a repeat violator. |
15:34 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Quick notice. |
15:34 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
In one hour, we will be at the Hungry Dog Tavern this Sunday from 4 to 6 after the Q&A for 2 hours of fantasy music by Dj Sasha. The tavern is as authentic to a medieval as I could make it inside. Room may be a little tight but we should all fit. So come and join us as we party and raise a little lindens to keep the doors open.Caledon Oxbridge Village (238,68,22) |
15:34 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Well less than an hour. |
15:35 |
TomSTomson |
Would teleporting to someplace be seen as a violation? Especially since I wasn't there more than 2 seconds. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It can be. It depends on the local sim rules. |
15:35 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
Some places just don't like your name |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The owner of a sim sets whatever rules he or she desires. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And some of them can be just weird. |
15:35 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
I was ejected several times from a place I liked because someone thought my name sounded like a griefer. |
15:36 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
"SOUNDED" like a griefer. Shakes my head. |
15:36 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Does it? |
15:36 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
Apparently. I don't know. |
15:36 |
Agatha Macbeth |
I don't think so |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Tom, if you will IM me the name of the sim you are having trouble with, I will go there after Q&A and check out their rules for you. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Got it. Thank you. Tom. |
15:36 |
Gronk Seriman |
I got ejected and BANNED from a sim once. The owner had a trigger finger. Claimed I was walking around underground when I was not. No idea what was wrong with his viewer. |
15:37 |
Ember (emberell) |
Sometimes, due to a memory leak, SL can render you in very odd high/low places |
15:37 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
ha ha ha hah. |
15:37 |
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) |
OMG Gronk. |
15:38 |
Agatha Macbeth |
I've been to places it takes half an hour just for your clothes to rez |
15:38 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yeah, memory leak can make the avatar appear in weirdest of places. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There also used to be a "cloak of invisibility" gadget that would make your avatar look invisible, even to the extent of having no floating name, and it would work by putting you underground [and moving your camera viewpoint up above ground]. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That sim owner might have been burned by griefers using those. |
15:38 |
|
Fringe Element (fringeelement2) nods :) |
15:38 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
We banned one griefer using that, trying to hide underground below the Library. |
15:39 |
|
Agatha Macbeth nods. |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Part of the griefers group but the name escapes me for a moment |
15:41 |
Gronk Seriman |
I know about the underground trick. It just made me mad I was punished for a glitch. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Griefers used to be really bad in SL. Not as much now as in the past, and a lot of sim owners/managers got very quick to ban first / ask questions never. |
15:42 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Think a lot just grew up and moved on. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope so, Agatha. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Any other questions tonight? |
15:42 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Indeed. |
15:42 |
badgerofzen |
No, they just move on to other games, ha ha. |
15:42 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Probably. |
15:42 |
lovejoy2199 |
Carl: Since you do so much work in the 'virtual world', are there books I can pick up learn more? |
15:42 |
lovejoy2199 |
Yo! |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Most books on SL were written when SL was much bigger. I own some, and they are all pretty much out of date. |
15:43 |
lovejoy2199 |
Must be something wrong with my typing. Words are popping up I didn't type. |
15:44 |
lovejoy2199 |
Probably right. But, at least they should be basic. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The best resource is the SL Wiki and the LL knowledge base |

15:45 |
lovejoy2199 |
I mean more than just SL. |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You mean virtual worlds in general? |
15:45 |
lovejoy2199 |
Yes. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are a lot of those. Most are not "how to" books, but books on various aspects of virtual world building and culture. |
15:46 |
lovejoy2199 |
Ok. That is a start. |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just as an example: https://www.amazon.com/s?k="virtual+worlds"&ref=nb_sb_noss_2 |
15:47 |
lovejoy2199 |
Google Amazon? |
15:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
It's probably really hard to write a book about virtual worlds in general, since each world is based on different technologies, different graphics engines, different goals. |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Keep in mind some of those books will be using "virtual worlds" more metaphorically, and some will be focused on VR. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But that's what Amazon has descriptions and reviews for. |
15:48 |
lovejoy2199 |
Ok. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, there are news blogs on virtual worlds. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Living in a Modem World and New World Notes are my favorites. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They do both tend to cover SL the most. |
15:49 |
lovejoy2199 |
ok |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions tonight? |
15:50 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Please excuse me. I see Sasha at the hungry dog tavern. Hope to see you there |

Goodnight everyone. See you all next week, if not sooner. Thanks for coming tonight. |

Thanks for hosting, Carl. |

I am off to do the transcript for Wordsmith |
15:52 |
