Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2021-03-07
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to General Q&A. It has been a few weeks due to some stuff in my RL that caused me to have to cancel two weeks running. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | I am here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Without your questions, I have no answers and this is all very boring... |
15:01 | lovejoy2199 | back. And, with tea |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | And if I don't know the answer, I know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello everyone. |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome Kamilah |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Let's start. |
15:02 | lovejoy2199 | Ok. How is the power in Texas? lol |
15:02 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Hello Carl! Good to see you again ^^ |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't have any announcements. |
15:03 | Kamilah Hauptmann mostly dropped in to give Carl one of those for 2021. [Kamilah passes a Caledon Pound for 2021] |
|
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Power in Texas is on where I live. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | And most of the state. |
15:03 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | That's good |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Power outages and pipes freezing happened all over the central south of the US |
15:03 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Yes I saw that on the news. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Texas just made the news. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Things are all back to normal for the most part. |
15:04 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | He he unfortunately yes |
15:04 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | good |
15:04 | ShaRa Ishtar (shannonraven) | Where are all your partners, reporting on events, improvements, railway progress, Christmas collections, and all that stuff? |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello Andrea. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Do you have any announcements? |
15:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | That would be Dean's Q&A |
15:05 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hi all. |
15:05 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Hey Andrea. |
15:05 | lovejoy2199 | Hello Andrea. |
15:05 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Been asleep all day. Noting to report, Just glad to see you all. |
15:05 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I do have. |
15:05 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | looks for it. |
15:05 | Gronk Seriman smiles and waves to Andrea.
15:05 | YselleScott | Hello Andrea :) |
15:05 | ShaRa Ishtar (shannonraven) | Oops—I thought Deans' Q&A, and this Q&A—they are the same... |
15:06 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hmm I'll have to go and get it. The address for pics from the last few weeks on Flickr. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | No. This Q&A has no Deans. Except Andrea. And whoever shows up in the audience. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | It is just questions and answers. |
15:06 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | So nothing right now. Might have a party a little later today. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | I have been in SL and involved in new user help for over 15 years so I know a fair amount. |
15:07 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Will let you all know by notice. |
15:07 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Back to you Carl. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | So. Let's go to the questions. |
15:08 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand.
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Gronk, please ask! |
15:09 | Gronk Seriman | I ran into somebody who joined SL before he was 18 years old. Since then, he's turned 18, yet he is still restricted to General. |
15:10 | Gronk Seriman | Shouldn't one automatically get upgraded if one entered their correct birthdate? |
15:10 | ShaRa Ishtar (shannonraven) | Yes, of course. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | They should. But it may be that he's going to have to contact customer support (via trouble ticket) and provide proof of age. |
15:10 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Get him to roll an alt and visit a furry sandbox. They'll never want to leave G rated again. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Probably in the form of scan of a government ID |
15:11 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Another solution is to make a new account :-) |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes, but I'm assume he has stuff he wants to preserve. |
15:11 | Gronk Seriman | Ah. He said he got no response from tech support. And I have no idea how truthful he was. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Making a new account is easiest, yes. |
15:11 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | That's for sure he he. |
15:12 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) nods
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't know what to say. What I described should work. |
15:12 | Gronk Seriman | Sounds like it. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/age-restricted-content-r4/ |
15:13 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Although... |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | LL claims there that they determine age based on the "birthdate you provide when you set up your Second Life account" |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Is it possible he never set his preferences to allow him to access Mature and Adult regions? |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | You have to pro-actively do that, or SL defaults to G-rated. |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/accessing-adult-land-and-content-r236/ |
15:14 | Caissa McCarey | It's possible the kid is still a kid and was hoping to con an adult into giving some secret way to access naughty stuff. |
15:14 | Gronk Seriman | He said they were grayed out and unchangeable in his Preferences. |
15:14 | Kamilah Hauptmann nods.
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | I am leaning towards Caissa's theory at this point. |
15:14 | Gronk Seriman | I am too. |
15:14 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | This could be silly but maybe changing Preferences -> General and to put Allow to access to G, M, A rated places, I say this because when I joined, I couldn't go and I had to change that |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes, Rodrigo. This person is apparently claiming that those options are grayed out for him. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | I think I've answered as much as I can without talking to him. |
15:15 | Rodrigo (pantera3715) | Okie. |
15:16 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you! |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | I suspect he's underage or he did not do his trouble ticket correctly and it got lost in LL's system. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | Next question? |
15:17 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand again.
15:18 | Gronk Seriman | Poseballs. They can affect your camera position. Is that changeable? |
15:18 | Kaitlin (jkaitlin) is online.
15:18 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Oooh, I've coded some of that. |
15:18 | Gronk Seriman | I have furniture that moves the camera to an odd position when I sit. Can that be changed? |
15:18 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Yes. But you have to camera anchor on something. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | Once you are posed, you should be able to use the camera controls to pick what position you want. Or are you asking for how to fix the actual poseball/animation? |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | If so, Kamilah knows! |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | And seems to be typing a comment now. |
15:19 | Gronk Seriman | The pose is fine, but where I put the chair, the camera always darts to behind a wall. |
15:19 | Kamilah Hauptmann | If the code has a camera control in it, and you Esc a couple times, your camera will settle on those settings. You should be able to Alt Click on something to anchor your camera and move it around normally. |
15:20 | Kamilah Hauptmann does not generally use the camera controls panel within the viewer so you'll need to experiment with that.
15:20 | Carl Metropolitan | That also might be just the position of the furniture using your default camera position. |
15:21 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Some sit scripts will move the camera to a 'flattering' position to view your avatar sitting. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | I'm a dedicated CTRL ALT mouse movement guy; my camera is almost never where SL puts it. |
15:21 | Kamilah Hauptmann | OR maybe for aircraft, vehicles will move the camera. |
15:22 | Gronk Seriman | I was thinking it might be a carry-over of using the creator's camera position when the item was made. Made sense for him or her, but not for me. |
15:22 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Default looks like this to me: https://puu.sh/Hn62r/d4e9ed2c5c.png |
15:23 | Kamilah Hauptmann | But anyway, unless you can edit the script, you won't be able to do anything other than what the script demands until you override with your mouse or the camera controls panel. |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | First thing to check is whether the furniture item you are having issues with is Modifiable. If not, your options are live with it or replace it. |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | If it is set to Mod, then you can at the very least replace the script. |
15:24 | Gronk Seriman | OK. I should have checked that from the beginning. |
15:25 | Kamilah Hauptmann | To experiment with camera controls in sat upon objects I suggest trying some vehicles, they often have different camera placement settings. |
15:27 | Gronk Seriman | Another example is a couch I have with several animations to choose from. The camera jumps around to different places with each position. Very annoying. |
15:27 | Kamilah Hauptmann | [15:21] Kamilah Hauptmann: Some sit scripts will move the camera to a 'flattering' position to view your avatar sitting. <--- |
15:27 | Kamilah Hauptmann | Sub out flattering with annoying. |
15:28 | Carl Metropolitan | You can look up some basic pose scripts on the LSL wiki to learn how they work. |
15:28 | Gronk Seriman | Makes me think the poses were collected from different sources, with each having a camera position built in. |
15:28 | Carl Metropolitan | Honestly, the easiest thing to do is just buy a new piece of furniture. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question. |
15:29 | Gronk Seriman | Heh! |
15:29 | lovejoy2199 | Uhhh...never thought of the LSL wiki. I am so used to using firestorm. |
15:29 | Kamilah Hauptmann | When buying furniture be sure to look at it in a show room and see if it does the weird triangle thing when you move your camera back. |
15:29 | lovejoy2199 | Back to basics. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | LSL wiki and the SL wiki in general are very, very useful. |
15:30 | Larky (larkylouz) | Hey Jan |

15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you all for coming this afternoon/evening. |
15:32 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Thank you for coming. |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Next week will be the full Q&A with the Deans. |
15:33 | Larky (larkylouz) | Thank you, Carl, Andrea. Take care all |
