Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2020-10-04
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. It is 3 PM SL Time, and it is time to start. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Andrea should be here soon. She's prepping for a fundraiser. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome Badger |
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello Ember |
15:01 | badgerofzen | Hullo |
15:01 | Ember (emberell) | Hello, Carl. Sorry I'm late! |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | When Andrea gets here, she can do her announcements. So let's go ahead and start with questions. |
15:02 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Actually, one thing. Someone who wants to interview me, of all people, about the virtual currency matters of SL. In RL. Linden Dollar is of course the kind of virtual currency that can be turned into RL money but do you think there would be other significant details I could try to explain? |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Elfbiter, I am not sure what you are asking. Are you saying someone wants to interview you about SL/RL economics? |
15:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Yup. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello Gronk |
15:05 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I know the basics, of course. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | That's a huge topic. |
15:05 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Probably, yes. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | In order to be able to do RL/virtual worlds currency transactions, LL had to go through a number of government approvals. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | And if people cash out, the money is taxable (in the US). |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | LL spun off its payment processing and RL/virtual world currency exchange business into a company called Tilia. Still owned by the same people, but a separate company from Second Life. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello Andrea. |
15:07 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hi |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | Tilia is supposed to handle transactions from multiple platforms. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | So they are offering their expertise to other companies who might need a similar solution. [Useful Links: Tilia FAQ: https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/tilia-faq-r1533/ Tilia: https://www.tilia-inc.com/ ] |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Do you have any idea specifically what they might want to know? |
15:10 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Not entirely but their specialty seems to be so-called community currencies |
15:10 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | So, I am not sure what exactly they want to ask. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, the L$ would qualify, but it is fairly unique in being bought and sold for RL money with the blessing of LL. |
15:11 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Yup |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | I hope this helped a bit. |
15:12 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Maybe I tell them to reactivate their account and ask around. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | That's a good idea. Is this person a journalist? |
15:13 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | If that still exists. |
15:13 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | University-level researcher. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Or they could start a new one. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Before we go to another question, I'd like to stop for Andrea to make any announcements. |
15:13 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hi |
15:13 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | The next bi weekly fundraiser for the Caledon Oxbridge University will be at Jan and Sigurds place, Silver Mist Beach & Gypsy Camp, in Mayfair, Caledon. We gather today the 4th of October, at a slight time adjustment of 4:30 for 2 hours of music provided By Sigurd Hammerthall himself! Theme is Gypsy so dress appropriately. Caledon Mayfair (199,215,23) |
15:14 | Soup Jonson cheers!
15:14 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | We are doing well on donations for the COU. But this year I'm pushing a bit more. |
15:14 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | A larger buffer will help me feel better. |
15:15 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Back to you Carl |
15:15 | Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) | badgerofzen gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you Andrea |
15:15 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Thank you badgerofzen |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | And thank you Badger for that donation. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Back to questions. |
15:15 | badgerofzen | yw :) |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | You ask them; we answer them. |
15:16 | Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:16 | Ember (emberell) raises her talon.
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | Please go ahead Ember. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you for that donation Harper. |
15:17 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Thank you for the donation Harper Sinclaire. |
15:17 | Ember (emberell) | Where exactly IS the option to enable or disable double-tap E to fly? Someone brought it up to me again recently, and I wasn't able to find it. The closest setting I could find was "Fly / land on holding up (jump) / down (crouch)" |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't know. You have stumped me. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | I always use the up and down arrows to fly. |
15:18 | Ember (emberell) | Hum, ok. Thanks anyhow! |
15:18 | Ember (emberell) | I'll let you know if I find an answer. |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Try this page: |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Getting_started_in_Second_Life |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Second section from the top is on Flying |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | It seems to address your question: |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | "To fly, you can hit the blue fly button at the bottom of your screen, or hit F, or press and hold the Page Up key. Once airborne, you can use either Page Up and Page Down to rise and fall, or E and C on your keyboard. Tapping those will make you jump. Hit the Home key or F again or "stop flying" to do just that. " |
15:20 | Ember (emberell) | Hm... No mention of being able to disable a double tap of E to fly. |
15:21 | Ember (emberell) | I'll check the standard SL viewer. It may be they meant the other setting. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Also try asking in the Firestorm English Language support group. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? |
15:21 | Ember (emberell) | I will, thanks. |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | If anyone has any questions, please ask away. There is no dumb question. |
15:22 | Soup Jonson | I forgot I had an announcement |
15:22 | Soup Jonson | Is it too late? |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | No. It is not Soup. |
15:23 | Soup Jonson | Yesterday, “What Are You Reading?“ was filmed for YouYube and made into a podcast. It was the last day of banned books week. Elf and I both voiced. |
15:23 | Soup Jonson | I now have the links for that event. |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | Please share them. |
15:24 | Soup Jonson | Here is a link from yesterday—a youtube of Soup https://youtu.be/QESj4TTC8pg and here is the podcast: https://anchor.fm/community-virtual-library/episodes/What-Are-You-Reading--With-Soup-Jonson-for-Banned-Books-Week-2020-ekjgqj |
15:24 | Soup Jonson | Thank you! |
15:25 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Anybody want a notecard about some banned books? |
15:25 | lovejoy2199 | Okay. |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | I would like one. |
15:26 | lovejoy2199 | Thank you |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Any other questions? |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, given the overwhelming silence, I think that's a "no" to additional questions. Wait—Gronk is typing something. |
15:27 | Gronk Seriman | Why do we drive on a parkway, and park on our driveway? |
15:28 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | :-) |
15:28 | Kara2016 | good question. |
15:28 | Gronk Seriman grins.
15:28 | lovejoy2199 | Never been to LA during rush hour. |
15:29 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I was back in 1991. It was... crowded. |
15:29 | Kara2016 | And you never see a street named Driveway, just Drive. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Parkways were named that originally because they were designed with wide medians planted with trees and flowers. |
15:29 | Ember (emberell) | Taking a look here on the SL viewer, the same setting applies (rather than double tap e to fly) |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Driveways were places you drive away from. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | So any other questions? |
15:30 | Kara2016 | Interesting. |
15:30 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Yes I have one if you have time? |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | Please, Harper |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | I have no idea if my answer to Gronk's question is right. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | I am pretty sure it is not :) [Turns out I was close on Parkways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkway ] |
15:31 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Thank you. I want to develop clothes, I used to do it on another program called IMVU. Anyway I don't expect you to tell me the upload procedure or anything but can you refer me to someone/where? |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | I do know a bit. |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Most clothing in SL is sold (currently) for various brands of mesh bodies. |
15:32 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Okay, I am only stuck on perhaps one part of the flow. I can make clothes, (not meshes) and the part I am stuck at is sizing and upload and that is it. |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Clothing is usually created in Marvelous Designer and rigged in Blender. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | So you want to make non Mesh clothing? |
15:33 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Thank you, Elfbiter :) |
15:33 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Yes I do texture and upload? |
15:33 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | On premade meshes |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | Ah |
15:34 | Ember (emberell) | You may need the UV of the mesh in question, if it's not the standard SL body. |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. If you are using full-perm licensed mesh clothing, the package will come with what's called a UV or AO map |
15:34 | Gronk Seriman | Harper, one sad place on our campus is the forgotten Atelier, where fine clothing and jewelry were taught and made. Those professors moved on, but the class space remains. There are many echoes of those classes still there. I can show you the place after the meeting, if you like. |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | That's a map that shows where different textures go and baked in shadows. |
15:35 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | sounds good Gronk... Thank you Carl, then it's just the upload where I am stuck |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | Usually you would bring in that map in to GIMP or Photoshop and then apply textures in a separate layer. |
15:36 | Carl Metropolitan | Then when you finish you use "multiply" to blend the layers and save as a PNG (Ping) file |
15:36 | Carl Metropolitan | Then you upload that file from the Build menu: Build/Upload/Image |
15:36 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Okay |
15:36 | Carl Metropolitan | Note that any individual image you upload is limited to 1024x1024 |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Most mesh AO/UV file images are at 1024x1024 |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Some might be smaller. |
15:37 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Okay |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | As for working with textures in general, we have some tutorials next to the Oxbridge sandbox. I can show you after the session. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | Does that help? |
15:38 | Harper Sinclaire (colelascotta) | Very much so. Thank you. |
15:39 | Carl Metropolitan | Any other questions? |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Then remember that next week is the second Sunday of the month and it will be time for Q&A With the Deans. |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | I will be in the audience and not up here :) |
15:40 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hope to see you at the party |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you all for coming! |
