Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First let's give Andrea time for any announcements. |
15:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Join us at the Governors Mansion. We gather at 4 PM after the Q&A for 2 hours of music and dancing. We will be having the fund-raiser for the Caledon Oxbridge University. Dj Sasha will be spinning the tunes to the theme of Victorian and Victorian Steampunk. I hope to see everyone as we party on the Governors hospitality. SlUrl Caledon Victoria City (201,54,23) |

Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Someone asked about Gronk being absent last week. She is fine; her work schedule changed. She will be in when she can. |
15:01 |
JackCulinane |
Gronk was here yesterday. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you for letting us know, Andrea. |
15:01 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I will head out in a bit. Back to you Carl. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No big SL-related news this week. Save that LL banned political billboards, going beyond their existing anti-ad farm regulations. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will not miss them. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2020/09/second-life-political-billboards-trump.html |
15:03 |
Jorge Serapis |
Political billboards on public lands, not private, nu? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. On private land. |
15:03 |
Jorge Serapis |
As well? Wow. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Mainland, only I think. |
15:04 |
Jorge Serapis |
That's a bit.. 1984... |
15:04 |
|
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) makes note to put up a giant billboard for Giant Meteor |
15:04 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
“This time, however, Second Life owner Linden Lab responded, updating its policy on virtual world advertising to prohibit ad content that are "political in nature" from the SL mainland, which the company maintains. (This policy does not apply to privately-owned regions and continents.)” |
15:04 |
Cychwynn |
Hmm... |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So you are welcome to weigh in on Gladstone vs Disraeli outside your homes in Caledon. |
15:05 |
lovejoy2199 |
lol… lol. |
15:05 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) could ponder about Miina Sillanpää :-) |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So, lets go on to questions. |
15:06 |
Jorge Serapis |
*grabs Ember's paw and raises it* |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So any questions? So Andrea and I can answer them? |
15:06 |
Ember (emberell) |
Excuse me! |
15:07 |
|
Ember (emberell) huffs. |
15:07 |
lovejoy2199 |
Is that new or old ads? |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't know. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What do you mean by "old ads"? |
15:08 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
As in placing new ones as opposed to keeping the existing ones? |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think it covers all ads. |
15:08 |
JackCulinane |
In that blog post, they quoted someone complaining he had to remove 47 previously placed ads. |
15:09 |
lovejoy2199 |
When I ride my trains/loco from Yucca Station, the trackside is full of them. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think the change is going to be left up to LL in a lot of cases. The only addition to written policy seems to be "Ad content may not be political in nature" on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Policy_on_ad_farms_and_network_advertisers |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That could be read as only applying to Networked Advertising or Ad Farms, but it is not clear. |
15:11 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
So is LL still involved in the day-to-day of SL? I understood that SL had been sold, but I'm not up on what that means. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Linden Lab, the owner of Second Life and Tillia, is the entity that was sold to a group of US-based private investors. |
15:11 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
LL was acquired. LL did not sell SL. |
15:12 |
Lightweaver Balan |
'meet the new boss, same as the old boss' |
15:13 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
I guess I don't understand the difference. |
15:13 |
JackCulinane |
I'm surprised the kitten app hasn't been brought into SL. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
LL did sell Sansar but that was some time ago. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
LL still owns SL. The people who own LL changed. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And it is also possible that some of the previous owners still own smaller stakes in the company. We don't know. It is not a publicly traded company. |
15:14 |
Ember (emberell) |
So LL in this case still has a direct line to SL. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. Linden Lab owns Second Life (and Tillia). That has not changed. The people who own Linden Lab have changed. |
15:14 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Okay, thanks. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:16 |
Cychwynn |
it was mentioned the other week, but what was meant to have changed in the sim border crossings? I'm not noticing anything better /worse |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just a report that LL had fixed some issues with them. It is possible that some of the changes have not been rolled out for all sims yet. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And some of the changed may not be fully apparent until SL moves to the cloud. |
15:17 |
Cychwynn |
Ahh. Okay that makes sense, thanks. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And it is also possible LL was just wrong :) |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They do that sometimes. |
15:17 |
Ember (emberell) |
They mentioned they made some changes especially for how vehicles handle sim boundaries? |
15:18 |
Ember (emberell) |
I have seen some more stable sessions of riding, though I usually avoid using vehicles that I have seen crash spectacularly. |
15:18 |
Soup Jonson |
I seem to go farther in my row boat, but I think that is just the changes Caledon made when we downsized. |
15:18 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
What about mock political adds that say things like Voldemort 2020 why choose the lesser evil? |
15:19 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
My dog for president—the only sane choice. |
15:19 |
Cychwynn |
hahaha. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The policy does not directly address satire. |
15:19 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Are there Vote for Cthulhu ads any more? |
15:19 |
Cychwynn |
I will vote for your dog over Voldemort, Zaida. |
15:19 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
Sometimes Elf. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But Cthulhu is a much better candidate than Voldemort. |
15:19 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
The most common one these days is the one about Giant Meteor—just end it already. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sweet Meteor of Death makes a lot of promises, but it never seems to hit. |
15:20 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
which apparently a giant meteor is actually going to pass close to earth right before the election—be careful what you wish for |
15:20 |
Cychwynn |
Oh my. |
15:20 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Great Pumpkin, anyone? |
15:20 |
|
Lightweaver Balan wonders if Sephiroth knows. |
15:21 |
JackCulinane |
I've seen reports that meteor is only a couple meters across. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's not even going to make it through the atmosphere. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is the meteors we don't see coming we need to worry about. But those are few and far between. |
15:22 |
Lightweaver Balan |
Hopefully it won't be a 1908 job. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
A Tunguska Event level meteor strike would certainly be an October Surprise. |
15:22 |
|
Lightweaver Balan nods. |
15:22 |
JackCulinane |
I believe that one was smaller than 2 meters. |
15:22 |
Lightweaver Balan |
bad news for reindeer too. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's go back to questions and answers. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you have one, please ask. No question is dumb. |
15:23 |
JackCulinane |
If it hits, it won't be pleasant, but it won't be an extinction event, either |
15:23 |
Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) |
Didn't mean to hijack Q&A. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. It is fine. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I can take questions on meteorites. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It might just take me some frantic googling. |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I used to write planet-building articles... |
15:26 |
lovejoy2199 |
Ok. Does plant X exist? |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lots of plants exist, Lovejoy |
15:26 |
Lightweaver Balan |
Ask a botanist. Lol. |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Still theoretical thing. |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Nibiru certainly does not exist. |
15:27 |
lovejoy2199 |
Since you were talking about meteors. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Last call for questions. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Going once. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Going twice. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
BZZT! |
15:28 |
Soup Jonson |
oh my big dance soon! |
15:28 |
lovejoy2199 |
Fair warning. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have not had a good "BZZT!" since I stopped doing Trivia games. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming. |
15:29 |
Soup Jonson |
TY for inviting us all. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Remember next week is the second Sunday of the month and will be Q&A With the Deans |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you there |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will be in the audience! |
