Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let's get started. Once again, I'm running a bit late today. I was here early, but Ember pointed me to a massive collection of Creative Commons freebies on Marketplace and I was engrossed. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:02 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Hey Kara. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:02 |
Soup Jonson |
Hi all. |
15:02 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Oh would like to know about those freebies. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And over to Andrea for any announcements! |
15:02 |
Cychwynn |
Me too! |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Not much, Tuesday night dance announcements are done in the Caledonian Nights group. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You might find some of them very useful for creating party venues. I've only started to go through them, but there is a huge set of free mesh cave components. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
The bi weekly event is next Sunday. I will announce by Wednesday. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Back to you Carl. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's go right into the questions then. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are there any questions tonight? |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Without questions this gets kind of boring :) |
15:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Anyone want a writing prompt? :-) |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you have any questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Virtual Worlds, Steampunk, etc., this is the right place to ask them. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... last call for questions... going once! |
15:09 |
|
Carl Metropolitan looks around for typing animations in the audience... |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Going twice! |
15:09 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
How about a refresher on slow SL? |
15:10 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And is it maybe due to transfer of things to the cloud? |
15:10 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
My broadband connection is very fast, but it doesn't seem to translate to SL. I don't really understand the various tools related to that. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay 1) the transfer to the cloud will have some impact on SL speed, as LL stopped buying new hardware about a year ago. So they are no longer patching things by upgrading their servers. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
2) Sunday afternoons are traditionally SL's peak concurrency time. That slows stuff down even more. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
3) SL’s client software can only handle so much data at a time. If you have fast broadband, you will almost certainly be able to pull more data down than the SL client can handle. Counter intuitively, you can often speed up your experience here by slowing down data rate. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To do that, got to the Preference window |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Under "Avatar" in Firestorm; Under "Me" in Second Life client. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Go to the "Network & Files" side tab |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There, at the top of the that window will be a "Maximum Bandwidth" slider |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It shows different levels of download speed. |
15:15 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
I'm connected to the router via Ethernet cable. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Try to use speed range that's on the upper end of what your internet connection is. They have ranges for Wi-Fi, DSL, and Cable. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
None for Fiber. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have Fiber, so I generally set mine at the high end of Cable range. |
15:16 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Mine's right in the middle of the slider, some above Cable, but before "May cause issues" |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That is where i have mine set, too. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Other things that can really slow you down: One, other people's avatars. Generally an avatar, especially one with a mesh body and mesh clothing, is the most complicated thing your SL client will be trying to render. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can speed this up by going to the "Graphics" side tab of the "Preferences" window and on the right side of that window you will find various sliders. Use the "Max # of non-impostor avatars" to reduce the number of avatars your SL client fully renders. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you are in a very laggy sim, you can take it down to only rendering two or three. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The other two things on that "Graphics" tab that can really slow down your Second Life client are Advanced Lighting Model and Draw Distance. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Advanced Lighting Model takes extra graphics processing power. If you have lag, it might make sense to make sure it is set to off. |
15:20 |
Kara2016 |
My draw distance is 128m. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Draw Distance tells your SL client how far from you to download and render data for. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The shorter the Draw Distance you have selected, the less your computer has to handle. |
15:21 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I have to see whole of Oxbridge at least... |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is almost never a reason to have Draw Distance set over 256 m. |
15:22 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Unless you're taking photos at Calas. :^) |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Less will speed things up on many computers, too. |
15:22 |
lovejoy2199 |
Hmm. This is interesting. Carl, when was taking Firestorm Classes, I was told the opposite. I was told to set my setting to 500 even through I have cable. They said this would cut down the lag. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. Photography is a good reason to use both Advanced Lighting Model, and a longer Draw Distance. |
15:22 |
JackCulinane |
Inside a room, draw distance is limited by the walls. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lovejoy, I don't know. The Firestorm class apparently recommends something that contradicts the Firestorm website. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would just try it both ways and see what works better. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I suspect the Firestorm Class was wrong. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Jack, it can be. But if some of those walls have gaps or clear sections it will not be. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think that's a decent "Intro to Lag" lecture. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions tonight? |
15:25 |
Soup Jonson |
Announcement. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please go a head Soup. |
15:25 |
Soup Jonson |
Elfbiter Skysmith has been published as part of an Anthology. I congratulate him as a writer there is nothing one dreams of more. He can give you particulars but I will give you the link which can be translated. http://www.vaskikirjat.fi/tarinoitaJaconiasta.html |
15:25 |
|
Cychwynn claps! |
15:25 |
JackCulinane |
APPLAUSE |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
In Finnish only, unfortunately :-) |
15:26 |
Cychwynn |
Sill awesome, congrats Mr Elf! |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Congratulations Elfbiter. |
15:26 |
|
Ligeia002 widely smiles and cheers |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Congrats Mr. EB. |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
ty |
15:26 |
Kara2016 |
Smiles brightly for ElfBiter. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you think you might create an English translation at some point? |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, I have a story in that anthology. |
15:27 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
There is a complication about the world's original creator, for one.. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ah. Copyright issues? |
15:27 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Thank you, Carl. |
15:27 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yup. |
15:28 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
My browser translated the initial page nicely, Mr. Elfbiter |
15:28 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Granted, he hopes to have the original graphic novels translated in some point in the future. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me reverse things for a moment. I have a question: Does anyone know what happened to the "Caledon National Museum"? |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Did it move? Is it gone? |
15:29 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
It certainly is not in the place it was. |
15:29 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Is that the one Star had a year or so ago? |
15:30 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
The one where Jules had exhibition of his poems. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. That is the one I am thinking of. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will try to remember to ask in ISC chat, I guess. |
15:31 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Good idea. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, if there are not any final questions, I guess we will adjourn this evening. Please remember next week is the Second Sunday of the month and instead of General Q&A we will have Q&A With the Deans |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I'll have it shortly. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will be in the audience and the Oxbridge deans will be on the stage taking your questions and updating you on all things Oxbridge. |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
The gallery is no longer rezzed. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Andrea. I'm sorry to hear it is gone. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming. Goodnight! |
