Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. I'm here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If I don't know the answer, I can Google it. In other words, I know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:02 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Kara2016 gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Kara for that donation. |
15:02 |
Kara2016 |
Smiles brightly. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Normally, Andrea would make announcements now, but she is not here yet this afternoon. So let me open that to the audience. Are there any Oxbridge related announcements you guys know of for events over the next week? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No one seems to be typing, so I'm going to assume there are not any. |
15:04 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Unless the Writers' meeting counts... |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've gotten approval for the SL17B Oxbridge Build, and will be claiming my parcel after I finish here this afternoon. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. Please promote the writers meeting, Elfbiter. |
15:05 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Hosting it at Thursdays 11:00 AM SLT Caledonian Night reading room. Announcement in COUG. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What sort of writing is it for? |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What do you all do there? |
15:05 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
All kinds. Fiction, prose, poetry, what have you. Occasionally even LaTeX :-) |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Idea is to talk about writing and writing processes. And I give out weird writing prompts. |
15:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Granted, sometimes we end up talking about people's cats :-) |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It sounds interesting. I don't write much and most of it ends up on my blog which has at least two regular readers. I will try to check it out. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let's move right into questions! |
15:09 |
|
Lightweaver Balan listens. |
15:09 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Is the Caledon Oxbridge Fencing club still active? |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Time to ask any questions you have about Second Life, Oxbridge, Caledon, Steampunk, or whatever. I'm easy. I will try to answer anything. I have Google and Wikipedia :) |
15:09 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) shouts |
Is the Caledon Oxbridge Fencing Club still active? |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
As a group, not that I am aware of. The facility is still used by people playing En Garde. |
15:10 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) shouts |
Thank you |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
brb |
15:10 |
SkylurLane |
I go some places and show up on a board over the dancers in red with high numbers (scripts, I think). What do you do about that? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think they have an ad on the ad board down the Cathedral and the Stone Circle. If they still do, click that to find out who is in charge and get more info. If not, they may be as moribund as Phrynne believes. |
15:11 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Lady Elicea, no need to shout. Patience, please. |
15:11 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Thank you, Larkylouz. I was not sure… My apologies. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Getting to the red letters does take a lot of scripts running. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Normally scripts on your avatar are in your body, HUDs, attachments (Hair, Mesh Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry) |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
Back. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Looking at your avatar you don't seem to have a lot of extra stuff on you. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you use a lot of HUDs? |
15:13 |
SkylurLane |
That is why I'm confused. |
15:13 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
AO? |
15:13 |
SkylurLane |
Everything seems to have a HUD. |
15:13 |
SkylurLane |
And yes, an AO |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. An AO and one or two HUDs should not push you to that level of scripts. |
15:14 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some items do have resizing scripts that count. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
One thing that can is very old hair and shoes and jewelry that are built with a script in each prim or mesh or sculpty part for resizing. Newer designs use one script in the root prim. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Normally a well designed item with a single resizing script will not have that much impact. |
15:15 |
SkylurLane |
Can you say that in English? |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi Andrea. |
15:15 |
Lightweaver Balan |
Shoes and hair tend to be worst culprits I find. |
15:15 |
SkylurLane |
lol |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Hiyas. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let me try to explain better. |
15:15 |
SkylurLane |
What can I look at to figure it out? |
15:15 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) remembers old hairdo with one script per strand of hair—lots of lag... |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Many creators don't make their items modifiable. They mistakenly believe that makes it easier for people to rip off their content. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To still allow people to resize their items, (or change textures, etc.), they use scripts. |
15:17 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
If you right-click on, and edit each thing you are wearing, you'll get the Build window. Go to the CONTENTS tab to see which scripts are present. If you're not sure, try making a copy of the item as backup, and then deleting the scripts from one copy. That should give you an idea which items are high volume in scripts. Hair, shoes, jewelry tend to be items high in scripts, particularly if they're old. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If an item is made up of multiple component parts, whether they be mesh, sculptie, prim, or a combination, the script to resize should be put into the last linked part (the "root") |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
However, some older items have a script in every part, leading to a high script count. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
How can you figure out your script count? |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You need to find a script count item that you can rez in world. It will give you a measure of your scripts and their usage after you click it. [Ed. note: There is a script counter at the end of one of the benches in the Oxbridge plaza.] |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Then if your script count in a certain outfit is very high, start taking off one piece at a time, until you can figure out what parts of the outfit are causing your script count to go way up. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Once you have identified excessively high script count items, you should either replace those items with newer ones, or make a copy of the item and delete all the scripts in it, and wear the copy. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The copy you delete all the scripts in will not be re-sizable or re-texturable, so keep the original. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Most items with scripts have an option to "Delete All Scripts" either in the HUD or the menu controls that pop up in blue boxes when you click on it. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If not, you can get scripts that you can drop in the root prim that will go through and delete all scripts in a linked set of prims, mesh, sculpties, etc. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I believe we have a gadget that will tell you how many scripts you are running in the Oxbridge freebies in the Train Station. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If not, you can find one for free or very low price on SL Marketplace. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We also have "Delete All Scripts" scripts in our collection of free scripts at the Train Station. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope that all made sense. |
15:22 |
SkylurLane |
Thanks. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also—what Larky said while I was too busy typing to read it :) |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Andrea is here now, so let's take a quick break from questions to see if she has any announcements. |
15:24 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
The bi weekly fund raiser will be later today at 4PM. |
15:24 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
It is a themed dance, though you do not need to be in theme. |
15:25 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
It is a 50's era build—poodle skirts, roller skates, etc. are okay. |
15:25 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Roller skates are available at the build from a free vendor in case you need them. Dj Sasha is Djing. |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Let me get you the LM. |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Caledon Oxbridge Village (139,228,1949) |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other stuff we need to know about for the next week, Andrea? |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
There is a dance at the Inn at the End of Time at 6 on Tuesday night. |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
|
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Relay for Life has its elay on Friday, I think. |
15:27 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I can IM anyone more information. Just let me know. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Andrea. |
15:27 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Most welcome Carl. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
(Note related to the previous question: "AO" stands for "Animation Overrider". Usually worn as a HUD, an AO replaces the default SL basic—some say ugly—avatar animations with more graceful and/or realistic and/or sexy ones.) |
15:28 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
If I'm wearing an outfit with hair, etc. that registers between 80-100 is that very high to be in an area with a lot of people or even a few people? |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lady Elicea, the number depends on what restrictions the owners of an area may have set. 80-100 sounds a bit on the high side, but not too bad—assuming the scripts don't take up a lot of memory. |
15:28 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Smiles. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, if you are worried about how your avatar is affecting everyone else on a sim, you can watch your "Avatar Complexity". |
15:29 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
thank you. I usually don't try to get that high because I think if I enter the room it will take people's breath away— |
15:29 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Thank you. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's a measure of how much impact your Avatar and its components and attachments has on people loading and rendering your Avatar. |
15:30 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Yes. That's the number I think I see every time I put on and take off an object. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can see everyones Avatar Complexity from the Advanced Menu. Go to the Performance Tools item and then from that sub-menu select "Show Avatar Complexity Information". |
15:30 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Okay. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you turn that on, everyone's avatar complexity will be displayed above their head in hover text. |
15:31 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Yes. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is best to keep that number under 100,000. |
15:31 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Oh. Okay. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Most people here will have even lower numbers as many don't have the more complex mesh avatars that are very popular in SL. |
15:32 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Maybe that is not the number I see for myself. |
15:32 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
I’ll take off my shoes now and see what that number is measuring (smiles). |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I see 48,433 for you. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question? |
15:33 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
Yes. Yes. (smiles). |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are there other questions this afternoon? |
15:34 |
Lightweaver Balan |
Last week's issue over posting pics to Flickr seems to have been resolved by the Firestorm update. |
15:34 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you for that donation, Lady Elicea. |
15:35 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
SkylurLane gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good to know Lightweaver. |
15:35 |
Lady Elicea (elicea.igaly) |
My pleasure. Thank you all for being here for us... |
15:35 |
|
Lightweaver Balan nods and smiles |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you are using Firestorm, you should download the new update, by the way, it has a lot of bug fixes. |
15:35 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Hope to see you all at the fundraiser dance. |
15:35 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
DJ Cheryl Rose (cherylrose999) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Skylurlane for that donation. And thank you Cheryl for yours, as well. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It seems like we don't have any more questions today, so I'm going to adjourn early. |
15:36 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
There will be a donation coin at the dance. But donations are not required. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming. |
15:36 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Past my bedtime, unfortunately. |
15:36 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Night Mr. EB. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good afternoon (or whatever it is in your time zone) everyone! |
15:37 |
Lightweaver Balan |
Zài jiàn |
15:37 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Hold the fort |
15:37 |
Gronk Seriman |
Sleep well, Mr. Skysmith. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye. Off to do the transcript and claim the Oxbridge space at SL17B! |
