15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But let's start! |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So... Before we start with the questions, Andrea do you have any announcements that you would like to promulgate? |
15:02 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
One sec. |
15:02 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Had cheese on my fingers. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That is a reasonable excuse. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Umm—Okay so we will be having DJ Sigurd Tuesday night. See notices. |
15:03 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Oh, now I'm doubly impressed. She can fly an air-board with cheesy fingers! <grin> |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Nothing yet on the fundraiser. I need to IM a few people. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... Caledon's anniversary is the week after this coming one. Lots of events will be going on, including the anniversary ball and rose hunt. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's get started on questions. |
15:04 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
What year anniversary is this for Caledon? |
15:04 |
GreshamOfThomas whispers |
I have a short 2 part question: |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please go ahead Gresham |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky, the 14th. Caledon Prime first rezzed February 26th, 2006 |
15:06 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Thank you |
15:06 |
GreshamOfThomas |
I am searching for a FIFA football stadium, and if unable to purchase, will be looking for tech help to build. A member here today pointed me towards some stadiums, but am looking something more exact – Any suggestions? |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In a few years Caledon Prime will be old enough to vote. |
15:06 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Kara2016 gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are you looking for something that is scripted so people can actually play a game? Or just the stadium? |
15:06 |
GreshamOfThomas |
Thank you Carl. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Kara? |
15:07 |
|
Soup Jonson sneaks in... |
15:07 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
ty Kara. |
15:07 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Hi Soup |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Keep in mind, Gresham, that anything that approaches the size of a RL stadium would take up a whole sim, if not more. |
15:08 |
Kara2016 |
Smiles brightly. |
15:08 |
|
Soup Jonson waves! |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So you would likely want to be content with a smaller representation. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The best thing I can suggest is to search SL Marketplace. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Look under "Buildings and Other Structures" |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You could also search in world to see if someone has made something similar using the Search field on your SL client. |
15:09 |
GreshamOfThomas |
Marketplace—what a fine suggestion :) tnx. |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
The European Tinys have probably built the stadium already. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Given the popularity of SL in Europe, it is not unlikely. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you decide you need to build a stadium, figure out how much land you have to work with. Then you can do your building in a sandbox if you need something that is just rezzed from time to time. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can look in Marketplace again for specific components that you might not want to build such as seating or textures or goals. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Does that help? |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What was your second part of the question? |
15:12 |
GreshamOfThomas |
Yes, I'm good writing code, (Fortran, Cobol, APL) but terrible at building seats, and hallways & ramps – tnx Carl. "Will – do |
15:13 |
GreshamOfThomas |
2nd part... ah I forgot too. :)\ |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Have you tried working in LSL (the scripting language for SL)? |
15:14 |
GreshamOfThomas |
No, (and how do you make you're voice do that?) |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No clue |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It just glitches and comes out as a whisper sometimes |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can do a /whisper before your text |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan whispers |
See? |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But I never do that, so who knows? |
15:15 |
Gronk Seriman |
Gresham, have you done a whirlwind tour of the stadiums you can find in Search? You can get ideas, and possibly a stadium from one of the owners. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I did pop in to Marketplace and there are some stadiums there that might get you started. |
15:15 |
GreshamOfThomas |
I'll look into LSL – as it'll be required, I had a FIFA stadium built in Unity a few years back – Lots of coding. |
15:16 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
testing |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And if stadium says "football" stadium, keep in mind it is likely for American football. |
15:16 |
Gronk Seriman |
But not necessarily. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So you would want anything like that to be modifiable by the buyer. |
15:17 |
GreshamOfThomas |
I really only need the stadium, America or not – My preference is one of the FIFA stadiums, and again another pref. is a Brazilian one. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So you can re-texture the field and replace the goalposts with something appropriate to association football, rather than US football. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I think I've answered that as best I can. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:18 |
GreshamOfThomas whispers |
Yes, modifiable is a requirement. I have cameras, and "stuff" to be added. |
15:18 |
GreshamOfThomas whispers |
Your can see example at my site. |
15:18 |
GreshamOfThomas |
www.audaxllc.com |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:19 |
GreshamOfThomas |
Thanks Carl – and others. Will research this over the next few weeks. Thank you all for allowing me to join-in. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Everyone is always welcome here. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
One other note about large buildings. If you build instead of buying the stadium, keep in mind that mesh builds are usually, but not always the most Land Impact (LI) efficient |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
For some large builds, sections made of prims, especially as prims can be rezzed 64x64x64 can take up less LI than equivalent mesh. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Especially if the prims are set to Convex Hull in physics before being linked. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But you can't use Convex Hull on anything that is hollowed. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, linking mesh to prims can blow up your total LI count if you link mesh to pretty much anything but cube-based prims. Spheres, Rings, Toruses, etc. can all have huge LI counts when linked to mesh objects. Sculpties, too. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will shut up now, and move to the next question. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So? Questions? |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I assume Greesham's was answered at least as he just TPed out. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Anyone else? |
15:25 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Chirp chirp. |
15:25 |
Gronk Seriman |
Is there any Unity to Second life Pipeline at all? Unity is a gaming building tool that a few new online worlds are using. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am not aware of any, but I am not the right person to ask. |
15:26 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Larky (larkylouz) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
ty Larky. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would assume Unity assets are built in some sort of 3d modeling format that would be convertible to SL mesh (DAE files for uploading) |
15:26 |
|
ennui (jackal.ennui) is offline. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Check this out for mesh formats in Unity |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/3D-formats.html |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Unity does export do DAE. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's all I can fake knowing with a quick Google search :) |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? Comments? Requests? |
15:29 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you! |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Random bitching about Linden Lab? |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You are welcome Gronk |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
(the latter is traditional) |
15:30 |
Kara2016 |
What did Linden do now? |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Nothing. It is just traditional to complain about them and blame stuff on them. |
15:30 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
They are also blamed for things they have not done... |
15:30 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Sometimes "Nothing" is the problem.... |
15:30 |
|
Larky (larkylouz) finishes bitching for one day.... |
15:31 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And Firestorm praised for features copied from the official viewer. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
"Why doesn't LL just add an additional two million hamster wheels to asset server power!" |
15:31 |
Kara2016 |
Oh… my shoes can be worn now… last week i could not get them on… |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That could have been an actual asset server issue. |
15:32 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
There seems to be account-specific troubles sometimes. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or it might have had something to do with the shoe mesh. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
True. |
15:32 |
Kara2016 |
Anyway, all is well. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And the more complex the stuff you do, the more issues can turn up. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Mesh bodies and heads, while hugely popular add complexities. We would teach an entire class on Advanced Avatar Customization: Mesh Bodies & Heads and spend an hour on it! |
15:33 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And I am not saying LL is always right or anything. When Ebbe visited Oxbridge, I still complained about the old Basic Account nonsense. |
15:33 |
Kara2016 |
That would be interesting. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
When did Ebbe visit Oxbridge? |
15:33 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some years ago. |
15:34 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I do not remember exact time. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It would be. There are many good classes that only need a teacher to put together an outline and get Wordsmith to approve them. |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
2014, according to my notes. |
15:34 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And technically there should be budget for the teacher... |
15:34 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
We could definitely use a Mesh Avatars class.. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I wonder if Ebbe will be around as CEO for much longer. He's had a much longer tenure than anyone but Phillip. |
15:35 |
Soup Jonson |
Larky is right! |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And his signature project Sansar kind of sunk. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I agree. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Who would be good to teach it? |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or at least can be guilted into doing it! |
15:36 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
:^) |
15:36 |
|
Carl Metropolitan notes that many of the Oxbridge staff here have system bodies. |
15:36 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Intentionally. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I wonder if Vanessa Hammer would be interested. She once taught an avatar class and she has a mesh body. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, I think we may be out of questions? Any last ones? |
15:38 |
Kara2016 |
i will ask the next i see her. |
15:38 |
|
Carl Metropolitan sees no typing. |
15:38 |
Gronk Seriman |
I had a HUD for one of my mesh avatars break today. It wouldn't work, and only relogging would fix it. Happens only once in a while. Anybody else have that? |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ah. We have one. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Scripted items sometimes just break and need either a reset or a relog to fix. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't know why. |
15:39 |
Coco St. George (koko.carlucci) |
Yes, that happens, too. |
15:39 |
Cychwynn |
It happens to my horse sometimes. |
15:39 |
Coco St. George (koko.carlucci) |
I can't use or detach the HUD, so I have to relog. |
15:39 |
Soup Jonson |
MY two goats. Ty. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Goats, aside, any other questions? |
15:41 |
Gronk Seriman |
That's true. I couldn't detach the HUD and reapply it. It was stuck till I relogged. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I guess we will adjourn then. |
15:42 |
Coco St. George (koko.carlucci) |
sometimes happens with clothes and shoes too. |
15:42 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Thank you, Carl, Andrea. Take care all |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Every time I say that someone says something relevant :) |
15:42 |
|
Carl Metropolitan looks for people typing |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay! Thanks for coming, and good night everyone! |
15:42 |
Coco St. George (koko.carlucci) |
The last question is: Are there any more questions? |
15:42 |
Cychwynn |
Good night all :) |
15:43 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you Carl, Andrea, everybody! |
15:43 |
Coco St. George (koko.carlucci) |
Thank you and good night |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No, there are no more questions. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you all next week! |
