15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is 3pm and time to start. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I understand there is some sort of "game" going on that many people may be watching so there may be a bit less people this afternoon. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh well, such is life. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Before we start with the questions, let's go to Andrea, our Dean of Development and see if she has any announcements of upcoming events. |
15:02 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Dance coming up this Tuesday at the Pub in the village. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Our friend Sig is the DJ. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
A rare event. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I'm finishing the poster in front of the stage. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Will be ready in a bit. |
15:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Has the info for the COU Jan Fundraiser. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That poster is for the Winter Ball, not the Tuesday pub event, right? |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I'll holler when it is done. |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Oh yes, thanks. |
15:04 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Trivia question: what were the wrong answers of Trivial Pursuit? :-) |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No clue, Elfbiter; I never played it. |
15:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
And I'll have the notice ready in a bit for this years Cancer memorial sanctuary. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It seems like the kind of trivia that would make it into a wikipedia article on the subject |
15:04 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
trivia when was SL started? |
15:05 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
That's all for me. I hope to see you all there. You don't have to donate to be there. But any amount helps. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Andrea. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's got to questions now. |
15:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
Monk, SL is over 16 years old. |
15:07 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
Thank you x. |
15:08 |
Wendy11 Kips |
I don't have voice. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you would like to see some examples of how SL looked in the early days, I would suggest the map exhibition at the New Kadeth Gallery. It has maps of SL from the early days. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wendy, we don't use voice for this Q&A. |
15:09 |
Wendy11 Kips |
ok |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If someone is asking questions in voice, I hope they will repeat them in text, as I don't even have voice on. |
15:09 |
Wendy11 Kips |
ok ty |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
That is a blessing and a challenge. SL is so full of quirks and features over those 16 years. But you only need to know the ones you like. I doubt anybody, even the Lindens know SL completely. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question. |
15:10 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Question: |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please go ahead Wendy. |
15:11 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Do I have to indicate if I have a question like a @ first? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just ask away. |
15:11 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Or just ask. |
15:12 |
Wendy11 Kips |
ok. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If I miss your question during a lot of conversation, ask it again. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What was your question? |
15:12 |
Wendy11 Kips |
I would like to see early SL how? |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You really can't. You can see maps of it. You can find pictures on the web. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are some old buildings from the early days of Second Life, too. |
15:14 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Ok ty. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There used to also be a SL History Museum somewhere. I would have to look for it. |
15:14 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Ah |
15:15 |
Gronk Seriman |
There is a huge part of the SL website with Destinations. Last I used it, there were several nice historic destinations listed. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I dropped you the map exhibit LM. |
15:15 |
Wendy11 Kips |
I could try the web. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you remember what any of those were? |
15:15 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
found this is it any good for you http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/History_of_Second_Life . |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Monk |
15:15 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Oh yes! Great. |
15:15 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
Its ok x glad to help. |
15:16 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Ty Monk. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I found a SLURL for the SL Historical Museum, too: Phobos (216,166,32) . |
15:16 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Excellent ty. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope that will help you start off. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question? |
15:18 |
Gronk Seriman |
Is a hot dog in a bun more like a hamburger or a sandwich? |
15:19 |
Kara2016 |
,..just had a hotdog.. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is a sandwich. Just a long narrow one with a tube of meat rather than stacked strips. |
15:19 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah! Thank you! |
15:19 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) remembers the epistemological arguments of what constitutes a sandwich... |
15:20 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
Some say has to have butter on it to be sandwich. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Now that that topic has been dealt with, any questions even vaguely related to SL? |
15:20 |
ShaRa Ishtar (shannonraven) |
Sorry, folks - is that serious? |
15:20 |
|
Gronk Seriman grins. |
15:21 |
ShaRa Ishtar (shannonraven) |
got a better use of my time |
15:21 |
Gronk Seriman |
Shara, we are seldom serious here. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We can quit early if no one has questions. |
15:21 |
Kara2016 |
I am looking forward too all the upcoming events in SL. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But if you have a question, even if you think it is a dumb question, please ask. There will always be at least one other person who does not know the answer either. |
15:22 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Question: I just heard that SL is having problems again. Can SL be hacked? |
15:22 |
MadylinW |
why do some people seem to prefer firestorm over the default viewer? |
15:23 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
SL has problems regularly and they are regularly at least partially fixed. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Two good questions. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me take Wendy's first. |
15:23 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Good question Mady. |
15:23 |
MadylinW |
I'm playing with both to see, but I am so used to the default. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
SL could be hacked. Most hacks of SL in the past have been in world where people took advantage of weaknesses in the server software to do things that should not be possible |
15:24 |
Wendy11 Kips |
I just switched to Firestorm |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
SL can and has been hacked. Linden Lab has been quite on it with that. They shut down crap in corporate time. Quickly. |
15:24 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Oh. |
15:24 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Terrible. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The company that runs SL, Linden Labs could also be hacked. It just depends on how good their security is. Pretty much any company that does not keep up their computer security can be hacked. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Firestorm versus the SL Client. |
15:25 |
MadylinW |
I am working on a project that is only stymied by the fact that the security would likely be questioned. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I use Firestorm; you will find most SL residents who have been here for a while use Firestorm too. |
15:25 |
MadylinW |
yes, please pros-cons. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Why? Firestorm is easier for me to use. I like the interface and the flexibility of it better. |
15:26 |
MadylinW |
Mine just crashed...so I am on from the default. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Though to be fair, most of the things that Firestorm fixes also get fixed later on the SL Client. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And the same for stuff that is added to the SL Client. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you are learning SL, it can be frustrating for people to give you help that assumes the Firestorm client. |
15:27 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Plus default [SL] viewer does not have a support group. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I try to remember to ask people with a viewer issue which they are using. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good point Wendy. |
15:27 |
MadylinW |
I am finding I don't know where things are, on the other hand my avatar has been shadowy and I could hardly see in side the walls here at Oxbridge |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is a very active Firestorm support group. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Mady, which viewer are you using? |
15:28 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Oh Yes! And xtremely helpful. |
15:28 |
MadylinW |
good to know, I think maybe I can tell better on my big monitor v this laptop. |
15:29 |
MadylinW |
I am right now on the default one. Was on the Firestorm earlier. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I usually advise people to use the one that works better for them if they are having viewer issues. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So if that's what you are doing, then... |
15:30 |
MadylinW |
I'll try to stay on it. i have to see why Firestorm crashed for me today. |
15:30 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Firestorm links to some processes of the official LL viewer so it is often better to have both installed. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I need both installed to help people sometimes. |
15:31 |
Gronk Seriman |
I find it good to keep the SL and Firestorm viewers current at all times. So if one screws up, you have the other one to try. |
15:31 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
There are others as well. |
15:31 |
MadylinW |
good idea, thanks. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Any other questions? |
15:32 |
MadylinW |
So, if I am on the default, how do I get light in the room, it's some key command I seem to have forgotten. |
15:33 |
MadylinW |
I was literally walking toward the light from the halls, like I was in after hours or something. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sometimes the normal SL day night cycle can make things appear too dark |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Try CTRL SHIFT Y |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That sets you to Noon in the cycle and keeps you there until you relog. |
15:34 |
MadylinW |
Yep...that fixed it. wow, where did all these people come from? |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It also gets rid of Windlight effects in ares that go a bit too far with their atmospheric effects. |
15:34 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Lol I know! |
15:34 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Mady. |
15:35 |
MadylinW |
Nice, very helpful. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can I be very helpful to anyone else this afternoon? |
15:36 |
MadylinW |
Thanks for being available. |
15:36 |
Gronk Seriman |
There's always the ultrabright facelight, too. I use that sometimes. |
15:36 |
MadylinW |
Oh, yes... I was going to resort to that, found the script in a book. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The ultrabright facelight only makes the area around you brighter. It also tends to annoy others. |
15:37 |
Gronk Seriman |
You can attach all sorts of lights to yourself when you are in a dark place. |
15:37 |
MadylinW |
that had occurred to me... |
15:37 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
Sorry all i have to go getting late in UK but good bye all. xxx |
15:38 |
Wendy11 Kips |
bye Monk |
15:38 |
MadylinW |
bye |
15:38 |
...MONK..... (monkstripes) |
Bye xx |
15:38 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes! Do NOT do it in a crowd. Just when you are exploring alone. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. If there are no more questions, and we seem to be losing people rapidly, I guess I will call it a night for this Q&A. |
15:39 |
MadylinW |
Thanks again. |
15:39 |
Wendy11 Kips |
Excuse me, do you have a tip jar? |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming. |
15:39 |
Wendy11 Kips |
ty Carl. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wendy, I'd rather you tip Oxbridge. |
15:39 |
Wendy11 Kips |
ok. |
15:39 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Caissa McCarey (lorelai.mccarey) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The coin on the side. |
15:40 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Carl! |
15:40 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Wendy11 Kips gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Caissa. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Wendy. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Goodnight |
