Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2020-01-05
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. It is 3PM SLT, and it is time for us to start! |
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions. |
15:00 | Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) | Kara2016 gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer. |
15:00 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you for that donation, Kara. |
15:01 | Kara2016 | Ooa warm fire. |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Just a reminder. Next week will be the monthly Q&A With the Deans, and I will be in the audience and not on stage. But I'm joined by Andrea who is on stage every Sunday, Oxbridge's Dean of Development. |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Before we start with the questions, Andrea do you have any announcements that you would like to promulgate? |
15:02 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hi, a bit lagged. |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan waves hello at Gronk and Agatha.
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | That's cool. We can go back to that later. |
15:03 | Agatha Macbeth waves at Carl and everybody
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Let's start the questions. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello to TheRunner |
15:03 | Soup Jonson | promulgate (v.) 1520s, from Latin promulgatus, past participle of promulgare "make publicly known, propose openly, publish," perhaps altered from provulgare, from pro "forth" (see pro-) + vulgare "make public, publish." |
15:03 | Soup Jonson | :) |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Who wants to get things rolling with the first question. |
15:03 | Soup Jonson | Great word. |
15:04 | Soup Jonson | Comment not a question. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | I did not realize it was obscure. |
15:04 | Soup Jonson | It is nice, not obscure. |
15:04 | Soup Jonson | :) |
15:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) shall not prevaricate
15:04 | Agatha Macbeth | If you do Elf, clean up the mess please |
15:05 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | :-) |
15:05 | Soup Jonson | Now that is a great one Elf. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | We have nineteen people here today. Surely there must be a question among all of you! |
15:05 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I wonder if anybody protests if I post my Writers Meeting to COUG? |
15:06 | Jorge Serapis | How's the general attendance of classes been this holiday period? |
15:06 | Larky (larkylouz) | They were canceled by Word for a good bit of the time. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't think anyone would mind; I believe that COUG comes under either Phyrnne or Word's area. |
15:06 | Phrynne | You can post them, Mr. Elfbiter |
15:06 | Jorge Serapis | So quiet overall? |
15:06 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | When is the next round for sponsors? |
15:07 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Red did appear for his class. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. A lot did not meet. Last week's poster was a sea of red canceled notices. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | This class has two hosts, so it will almost never be canceled. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, if no one else has a question, I will ask one. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | "Carl, what is the single most useful page on the SL Wiki?" |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | Thanks for that question, Carl. It is this page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits |
15:08 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) points at her earlier question and smiles
15:08 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | "Recent changes"? |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | The Limits page that covers all sorts of random bits of information about the maximums for avatars, inventory, building, animations, etc. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Oh. I missed the question Aevalle |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | I will scroll back. |
15:10 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Sponsorships. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Aevalle's question was "When is the next round for Sponsors." That's an Andrea question. She is our fundraising person. |
15:11 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Also wanted to get an idea of interest in a bi-weekly inventory cleaning party in the sandbox... |
15:12 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I'm running behind. This last year has been tough on my time. I'll setup a event soon for this month. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | As far as I know sponsorships are ongoing, whether they are Patron sponsorships (2500L$ a month) or class sponsorships (1000L$ a month—I think). They continue until the sponsor for whatever reasons can no longer donate. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | Aevalle, would that be sort of a practical class thing? The inventory cleaning. |
15:13 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Not necessarily a class—maybe more of a "lab" for the inventory class(?) combined with a social event. |
15:14 | Cychwynn | sounds fun |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | If it is, it might work well as a compliment to Wordsmith's Inventory Management class |
15:14 | lovejoy2199 | That sounds nice. |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | Are you interested in leading it? |
15:14 | Soup Jonson | I'd like it. |
15:14 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Yup :) |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | If you are, contact Wordsmith. He is also Dean of Education. |
15:14 | Kara2016 | Very interesting idea. |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | I think it would be a great addition to the schedule. |
15:14 | Phrynne | Also, the sandbox is over the Village, and can hold more people than the Oxbridge lecture hall. |
15:15 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Is there faculty control over the stream there? |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | As is the Alternate Lecture Hall we are in right now. |
15:15 | Phrynne | I have no idea about the stream. |
15:15 | Larky (larkylouz) | Might be good to have a partner with that to help people with adjusting outfits. I suspect the overlap could be a bit much. I'd be willing to help out, but I don't know much about mesh bodies. I've used them, but I'm no expert. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | I will have to check on that. I think it is the stream for Oxbridge Village in general. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | And that would probably be under EM control |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | EM = Estate Manager |
15:16 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Okies. |
15:16 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) Is a global so I'll check on it.
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | But as you are an EM for a lot of Caledon, that may not be an issue. |
15:16 | Kara2016 | Smiles brightly. |
15:16 | Phrynne | It might be separately controllable for the parcel. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | I think it is not a separate parcel. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | But we can check after this class. |
15:17 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Is part of the village commons. |
15:17 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) Will need to coordinate with the event schedule and my class schedule.
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | Work with Wordsmith on that. It is possible, though not easily shown on the calendar to have a class simultaneously at the Sandbox and the Lecture Hall. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | I am sure you and he can works out a good time. |
15:18 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Cool beans—thank you :) |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Also, Aevalle, I do need to talk to you about Advent Calendar next year. I was told that you were interested in working on it, and I had some ideas, and I wanted to see if our visions were complementary. |
15:20 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Sure! I thought I sent you a note about it but it's very possible that I didn't actually send it. |
15:20 | Soup Jonson | Advent Calendar is awesome for Oxbridge! |
15:20 | Carl Metropolitan | I could have missed it. |
15:20 | Carl Metropolitan | I will check. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question! |
15:22 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | would anyone want a party on Sunday afternoons opposite the bashful peacock? |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | Would it be opposite this Q&A? |
15:22 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Before or after. |
15:22 | Cychwynn | Sounds like fun :) |
15:23 | Soup Jonson | I love parties. |
15:23 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Anyone wants to dj that can dj it? |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | Then I have no objection. I'm about as social as an especially active fungus, though. |
15:23 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) chuckles
15:24 | Agatha Macbeth loves fungi
15:24 | Soup Jonson | Anti social is now hip and the new social Carl. |
15:24 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | had mushrooms with lunch |
15:24 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | we don't have to dance, could be a music event |
15:24 | Larky (larkylouz) | LOL. Andrea, you crack me up sometimes! |
15:24 | Kara2016 | Smiles brightly. |
15:24 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) fried fungi today before they would go bad,
15:25 | Agatha Macbeth hands Larky the glue
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | Stop oppressing my people! |
15:25 | Soup Jonson | I grow wild fungi in my yard not by choice. |
15:25 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Mushrooms, to be exact. |
15:25 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Maybe weekly fishing? |
15:25 | Agatha Macbeth thinks of Carlos Castaneda.
15:25 | Soup Jonson | prevaricate. |
15:25 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Argh...sorry, gesture |
15:26 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I have no experience with the fishing. if you would like to help me with that. I can provide the land. |
15:26 | Soup Jonson | Artsa Gunbu – $2,000 an Ounce. Growing from the bodies of ghost moth caterpillars. |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | I read his books in high school. I thought they were an interesting series of fantasy novels in the now-antiquated sub-genre of Magical Autobiography. |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | Apparently they were intended to be taken seriously though. |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | Who knew. |
15:27 | Soup Jonson | Maybe I'll mention those books Saturday. |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | I think now I would not have the patience for some of them. |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | Oh well, I am wandering way off topic. |
15:28 | Carl Metropolitan | Next question? |
15:29 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I have placed a fountain resting build in the village where you can sit and enjoy. |
15:30 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Look by the water by the dockhouse. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you Andrea. |
15:30 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Can't miss it. |
15:30 | Soup Jonson | I like the giant rabbits whomever placed them kudos. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | Those were Phyrnne's work. |
15:30 | Soup Jonson | I like them. |
15:30 | Agatha Macbeth | Follow them if they move. |
15:30 | Soup Jonson nods.
15:30 | Phrynne | They have numerous places to sit on them. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Especially appropriate as the hare is the heraldic animal of Caledon. |
15:31 | Soup Jonson | cool photo ops. |
15:31 | Cychwynn | And just really cute. |
15:31 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Any updates on the Oxbridge gargoyles? |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Phrynne is responsible for nearly all of the scenery and seasonal decorations of the Oxbridge common areas. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Last I heard no one knows who's inventory they are in. |
15:31 | Phrynne | It's part of being Dean of Commons. |
15:32 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Okay. |
15:32 | Agatha Macbeth | And does it well as always. |
15:32 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Bedtime. |
15:32 | Phrynne | good night, Mr. Elfbiter. |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Goodnight Elfbiter. |
15:32 | Soup Jonson | Be seeing you, Elfbiter. |
15:32 | Cychwynn | Good~night |
15:32 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Hold the fort. |
15:32 | Sanylle | nini Elfbiter. |
15:32 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Night Mr Eb. |
15:33 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Be seeing you. |
15:33 | Agatha Macbeth | Buonanotte. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | If no one has more questions, I may start asking some... |
15:33 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Cynthia is doing a sci-fi dance at the space platform Tuesday night starting at 6 pm Caledon Oxbridge Village (241,217,735) |
15:33 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Grab your space suit. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | Oh. That sounds fun. |
15:33 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Or change into something humanoid. |
15:33 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Or not. |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Any other upcoming events you would like to announce? |
15:34 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Not yet. |
15:34 | Cychwynn | Man i hope i can make that party :) |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | Apropos of nothing, I have started ordering some commonly-used household supplies via Amazon Prime. And a 12 pack of toothpaste is heavier than you would think. |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? Announcement? Grievance to Air? |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Rather than adjourn early. I will ask trivia questions. If you are the first person to get one right, you win 25L$ |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | LITERATURE & BOOKS: “Polynesia”, “Gub-Gub”, “Jip”, “Dab-Dab”, “Chee-Chee” and “Too-Too” were all associates of what children's book character? |
15:37 | Phrynne | Curious George |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | A good guess, but not it. |
15:37 | Sanylle | We have a fencing game here at Caledon, I believe it started here, yes? |
15:38 | Soup Jonson | A gub gub is a pistol in the game Borderlands. |
15:38 | Jorge Serapis | The Just So stories? |
15:38 | Sanylle | No. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | We do. Look at the ad board outside the Lecture Hall. I believe they have a poster there with a notecard for the fencing team. |
15:38 | Kara2016 | Cinderella? |
15:39 | Sanylle | Is anyone working on a caber toss game? |
15:39 | Carl Metropolitan | HINT: The lead character that gives these books their name is an upcoming role for former star of the Iron Man and the Avengers movies. |
15:39 | badgerofzen | Dolittle. |
15:39 | Carl Metropolitan | Correct Badger! |
15:40 | Cychwynn | lol. |
15:40 | Cychwynn | Just to late lol. |
15:40 | Sanylle | Those are from Doctor Dolittle? |
15:40 | Cychwynn | Night all. |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes, they are. |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | Goodnight Cychwynne. |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | That seems to be clearing the room. Are you guys sure you don't have any other questions? |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | SL: What is the maximum number of different materials that can be specified on a single mesh object uploaded to SL? |
15:41 | Sanylle | 8 |
15:41 | Jorge Serapis | 8 |
15:41 | Agatha Macbeth | 8 |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | Sanylle has it, just by a hair. |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | 8 (Eight) In addition, each face of the mesh object may only be defined as having one Material. |
15:42 | Agatha Macbeth waves like a boss and poofs.
15:42 | Sanylle | Thank you Carl. |
15:42 | Sanylle | Are there any other highland games we might interest someone in scripting? |
15:43 | Sanylle | Hammer throw? |
15:43 | Phrynne | Highland Fling? |
15:43 | Sanylle | Sack race? |
15:43 | Carl Metropolitan | I have no real idea. But first check Marketplace; a surprising amount of stuff has already been made for SL |
15:43 | Carl Metropolitan | I would not be at all surprised if someone has a Caber Toss game up for sale. |
15:43 | Sanylle | true, but this would be for the males |
15:44 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I can toss a caper. |
15:44 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Not far. |
15:44 | Phrynne | I'm called back to RL. See you all later. |
15:44 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) | Kilts should be required |
15:44 | Lady Aeval-Leigh of Speirling (aevalle.galicia) snerks
15:45 | Sanylle | Well, there is an outfit, a man wearing a kilt and holding a caber over his shoulder |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, I am pretty sure there are no more questions, so I guess we will adjourn early tonight. |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | I should create a special set of educational SL trivia questions to fill gaps here. |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you all for coming tonight. |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | See you in two weeks. |
15:46 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Thank you all for coming. |

15:46 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I was at a 30's dance before coming. Thus the swing outfit. |

15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you for that donation, BadgerOfZen |
15:46 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Building for Burn 2. |
15:47 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | See you all soon. |
15:48 | Carl Metropolitan | Goodnight. |
