16:46 | Valibrarian Gregg | Hi Wordsmith :) We can sit over here behind me....but I will also stand here and keep my eye on the landing point? |
16:46 | Valibrarian Gregg | ok? |
16:47 | Valibrarian Gregg | Hi Selby! Walk this way to the seating area |
16:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Sure |

16:55 | Valibrarian Gregg | Welcome Maggie! |
16:55 | Valibrarian Gregg | glad to see you |
16:55 | Maggie Larimore | hang on, I have to send some last minute stuff so just a sec |
16:55 | Valibrarian Gregg | sure! |
17:00 | Savage Taurus | hello |
17:01 | Valibrarian Gregg | YW! |
17:02 | Valibrarian Gregg | Welcome to the CVL-VSTE Literary Study Group. Virtual worlds provide a perfect way to discuss literature across distance! We meet on the 2nd Thurs of each month and usually read a short story (often Sc-Fi genre). We alternate between this location and our CVL Literary Study campfire. We are excited to share our Literary Study for August 2018 with the Virtual World MOOC! I am the Director of the Community Virtual Library and we partner with educational communities like VSTE. You can find our calendar of events on our website at https://communityvirtuallibrary.wordpress.com/ |
17:02 | Miss Basque (berdaxagar) | Hi! |
17:04 | Pionia Destiny | waves at Miss Basque |
17:05 | Savage Taurus | yes |
17:05 | ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville) | hearing |
17:05 | Valibrarian Gregg | Please click on the Chocolate Cake- in front of me on the rug :) |
17:05 | Valibrarian Gregg | You sound great |
17:05 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Anyone not able to hear voice? |
17:05 | Miss Basque (berdaxagar) | I can |
17:06 | Cliff Eclipse | I dont know....sounds like a gravely voice, a lot of smoking when you were young? |
17:06 | Valibrarian Gregg | We will use both voice and text- very flexible. |
17:06 | Valibrarian Gregg | I hear Wordsmith now loud and clear |
17:06 | Valibrarian Gregg | Yes! Last month was cool because it was "old time radio"! an audio story around the camp fire |
17:07 | Savage Taurus | old paper, old ink, old stamp, old post office |
17:07 | Valibrarian Gregg | It is fine if you did not have time to read the story! available here http://web.archive.org/web/20090223182332/http://homepage.mac.com/cssfan/jackfinney/sep590801016.htm |
17:09 | Savage Taurus | I thought it was very interesting how he describes night tiem being different than day |
17:09 | Savage Taurus | I often feel that way |
17:09 | Maggie Larimore | It's aa kind of altered state, a time when the details around |
17:09 | Maggie Larimore | you may not be so clear |
17:09 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, so do I. |
17:09 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes! I felt his mood at the beginning was a bit tired and "disillusioned"- bc his date was nothing special |
17:09 | Maggie Larimore | I have felt that way too |
17:09 | Savage Taurus | when someone is grieving or depressed, it often hits them worst in the wee hours of the night |
17:09 | Maggie Larimore | a bit dissociated as if you can feel the past around you |
17:10 | Savage Taurus | perhaps because the rays of the sun are blocked by the earth |
17:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Or even just tired. The wolves come closer, so to speak. |
17:10 | Valibrarian Gregg | And he also feels (this was 1959) the world is changing and we are losing the quaint slow-paced life. |
17:11 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A simpler world |
17:11 | Maggie Larimore | although it wasn't, his protagonists often fnd out |
17:11 | Valibrarian Gregg | He describes the library and the post office as lovely quaint "center of the community" spaces. |
17:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And important that the post office shares both times. |
17:12 | Maggie Larimore | and it's key that's a building that exists in both times |
17:12 | Valibrarian Gregg | and--- I loved how he described his feelings at night.. "The night is a strange time when you're alone in it, the rest of your world asleep. If I'd found that letter in the daytime, I'd have smiled and shown it to a few friends, then forgotten it. " |
17:12 | Savage Taurus | there is more of an otherworldly feel late at night, as if the vale between realms is thinner |
17:12 | Valibrarian Gregg | exactly Savage! |
17:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, defining when time is porous. |
17:13 | Savage Taurus | like the rays of the sun drive away ghosts and faeries, but at night we are exposed to the deep vast void of space |
17:13 | Savage Taurus | sort of like the rats / dragons |
17:13 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I tried to think of a concise expression for the mood -- sort of a restless malaise. |
17:13 | Savage Taurus | scattered by light |
17:14 | Valibrarian Gregg | I like how Finney struggles with the character's own explanation of why he answered the letter! Made it seem so real |
17:14 | Maggie Larimore | what I love about him is his matter of fact descriptions |
17:14 | Valibrarian Gregg | There in the silence of a timeless spring night it seemed natural enough to uncork that old bottle, pick up the pen beside it, ........ |
17:14 | Maggie Larimore | and the action -- this movement between times seems so possible, so normal |
17:14 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes .... and having written it, not wanting to trash it or have it returned. |
17:15 | Maggie Larimore | he's kind of a lyrical Hemingway if that's possible, the lyrical quality is never too much |
17:15 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes Maggie! I remember the first book I encountered on time travel as a child! The girl put on a magic ring and the world changed around her....same place/ different time. We are all fascinated by time. |
17:15 | Savage Taurus | I found this story to be very moving, even though I would not usually choose to watch the chick flicks this has obviously inspired |
17:15 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | What prompts Jake to write the return letter? |
17:16 | Savage Taurus | something in the ernestness of her plee |
17:16 | Valibrarian Gregg | me too Savage (I hate sappy stories!!) and somehow this was not at all sappy. |
17:16 | Maggie Larimore | but also his sense that it's his time to be meetng the one, and the women he's dating just aren't that, so that restless again on his part |
17:17 | Maggie Larimore | he's ready for a great love |
17:17 | Valibrarian Gregg | I think Jake feels that the girl from the 1800s- who wrote the letter- shares his feelings. He absolutely understands her words in his soul. |
17:17 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Touched by her letter; motivated to reply, even if not expecting his reply to reach her. |
17:17 | Savage Taurus | I could identify with her longing to find the perfect mate. Though at 21, most people her age nowadays would be more experienced |
17:17 | Valibrarian Gregg | It is like they are collaborating on a poem....across time. |
17:17 | Maggie Larimore | altho that doesn't mean that modern kids aren't still longing to meet the one |
17:17 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I like that image, Val. |
17:18 | Valibrarian Gregg | and I like how the anticipation builds.....as he realizes that there may be yet another secret door! |
17:18 | Savage Taurus | yes that is well done, the 3 drawers...3 is often a powerful number to use in writing |
17:19 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A lot of the story is descriptive. Even down to the stamps. |
17:19 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes Savage...especially in fairy tales and fantasy (hence in sci-fi) |
17:19 | Savage Taurus | yes there is lots of description |
17:19 | Maggie Larimore | that's what I love about him, he anchors the fantasy in the real, whether it's his time or the time he touches or travels to |
17:19 | Valibrarian Gregg | I think those visual details really helped the reader contrast the two time periods. |
17:20 | Savage Taurus | thats part of what makes the story so effective. Both time periods feel real |
17:20 | Maggie Larimore | me too and also believe it |
17:20 | Maggie Larimore | right they do feel very real |
17:20 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And that time nostalgia again, where the street is tree-lined rather than holding junkyards. |
17:21 | Savage Taurus | I usually read to my mom every night in the nursing home. Tonight I started by telling her this story from what I remembered of it. She liked it |
17:21 | Valibrarian Gregg | I was transported to the 1800s for sure. When he talked about the concrete- lack of trees and the automobiles surrounding him -so different than the photo he finds at the library.....sprawling open tree-lined streets and a girl in a long dress/parasol. |
17:21 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Although, I'm sure the past also had it's dismal places of disadvantage, but they've shifted places over time. |
17:21 | Valibrarian Gregg | That is awesome Savage! It would be a fun story to tell. |
17:22 | Maggie Larimore | in Time and Again he sees more of that be the protagonist inhabits the other time for long stretches, |
17:22 | Savage Taurus | heh I thought it was funny that she sent a selfie to him |
17:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That is awesome -- and is a ripple moving out from what we do here. |
17:23 | Savage Taurus | really not so different from modern women |
17:23 | Maggie Larimore | he has a scene in that book where he's riding a cable car down 5th avenue and there's so much detail about the people on the street, the busiinesses operating in the buildings on either side, you are thee with him |
17:23 | Valibrarian Gregg | Savage- I had not even thought of that! It WAS a selfie- a picture of herself (some things never change) |
17:24 | Maggie Larimore | well but she couldn't give him anything else of herself except what she looked like and her promise, so it's like she wants him to thinkk of her, not some faceless woman in 19th century clothing |
17:24 | Savage Taurus | yes it was very thoughtful of her |
17:24 | Savage Taurus | its a shame he didnt send a picture of himself |
17:25 | Savage Taurus | and cars! |
17:25 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes. And while she can't change a drawer once he opens it, no telling if she oscillated in her reply before settling on just the picture. |
17:25 | Savage Taurus | and airplanes! |
17:25 | Maggie Larimore | but she was dreaming about him, so she's got an image she's attached to Jake, and he doesn't have one of her |
17:25 | Savage Taurus | thats true |
17:25 | Maggie Larimore | I'll bet she did think it through |
17:25 | Valibrarian Gregg | The story illustrated how we can CONNECT simply through words.....as we are doing at this moment. |
17:26 | Maggie Larimore | and maybe went and had the photo done |
17:26 | Savage Taurus | she might have been disappointed if he didnt match what her dream was like |
17:26 | Maggie Larimore | exactly, so she was okay with her dream image of that perfect person |
17:26 | Maggie Larimore | but she wanted him to really know who she was |
17:26 | Maggie Larimore | to strengthen the connection |
17:27 | Cliff Eclipse | Smiles, wishing he could stay and contribute. Take care you all. |
17:27 | Maggie Larimore | I can imagine she would get into those hidden drawers across her life and reread his letter |
17:27 | Valibrarian Gregg | The story provides both a sense of loss and a sense of fulfillment in a deep connection. short and powerful |
17:27 | Maggie Larimore | thanks for coming Cliff |
17:27 | Maggie Larimore | I agree Val |
17:27 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Were the emotional reactions of Helen and Jake plausible? |
17:27 | Savage Taurus | for a while, when I was first in online worlds, I didnt want to know anything about the real people behind the avatars, because I didnt want the illusion broken |
17:27 | Valibrarian Gregg | interesting Savage....and then? |
17:27 | Savage Taurus | things change |
17:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | They do. |
17:28 | Savage Taurus | switched from fantasy games to more time in SL |
17:28 | Valibrarian Gregg | Do you feel you get to know the "real" person here.....no matter how they represent themselves as an avatar? |
17:29 | Savage Taurus | also, people started to use voice more, which pretty much breaks the fantasy that the person is an elf or orc, or what gender they are |
17:29 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I still recall that one of the first meetings I went to in SL was streaming a climate conference. At the end, the avitar seated near me, got up and hopped off (a kangaroo). |
17:29 | Savage Taurus | I definitely feel you get to know people better in SL than other MMOs |
17:29 | Valibrarian Gregg | How many of you remember when hardly anyone used voice? When I first entered- I don't think it was yet a feature in SL. |
17:29 | Maggie Larimore | I agree Savage |
17:30 | Maggie Larimore | I think you learn to listen or read the person and the variations in form move to the background, that can have a big impact on how you see people in RL |
17:30 | Savage Taurus | there was a movie where a firefighter was able to talk to his son over the radio...so like this story but through voice |
17:30 | Valibrarian Gregg | I remember a long snake avatar came to the library ref desk! I had to turn my camera away! Someone said he looked creepy- then he changed himself to a bunny haha |
17:31 | Maggie Larimore | my favorite experience of that was listening to the manager of the Spanish Association of Medicine's sim back in the day and he was centaur with horns and fire coming out of his horns, but I heard his description of why they set up the sim, both for meetings between them and for the privacy of prospective patients |
17:31 | Maggie Larimore | I started to get the message that you have to listen and feel instead of judge an opportunity away because somebody has lots of tats, or piercings, dreads, whatever |
17:32 | Maggie Larimore | lol Val |
17:32 | Valibrarian Gregg | Don't you think we learn to use the formats for various "best purposes" here? Sometimes audio, sometimes text, sometimes movement, sometimes only our words.....a constant dance of interaction. |
17:33 | Valibrarian Gregg | I think the concept of the desk with the hidden secret doors fits well into a virtual world! Simply click on it and see what happens ;) |
17:33 | Savage Taurus | yes we have many social tools here. SL is 3D social media more than a game |
17:33 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And things do bleed (as in fabric dye) between worlds |
17:33 | Savage Taurus | secret doors, hidden passages, bookcases and fireplaces that turn, wardrobes that lead into forests |
17:34 | Miss Basque (berdaxagar) | Sometimes a secret drawer stands for hidden truth or a turn of fortune. |
17:34 | Maggie Larimore | absolutely, skills, attitudes, experiences, learning |
17:34 | Valibrarian Gregg | The first virtual worlds (MUDs and MOOs) were text only--- right? |
17:34 | Savage Taurus | true |
17:34 | Maggie Larimore | yep |
17:34 | Savage Taurus | there wasnt much interaction between players though |
17:35 | Savage Taurus | mostly kill and loot and explore |
17:35 | Valibrarian Gregg | Wordsmith- I am reading the quotes you put in the discussion NC- from Kung Fu. I like this one! Totally fits the story - "Master Kan: Sometimes a stranger, known to us for moments, can spark our souls to kinship for eternity." |
17:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Do dances in SL, I was surprised at the visual presentation activated kinesthetic memory of RL dancing. |
17:36 | Savage Taurus | yes dances in SL are something that happens in other games very rarely |
17:37 | Savage Taurus | it is interesting how someone can get focused on a person they barely know |
17:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I realized that I have another two lines from that Kung Fu interaction on a notecard. |
17:37 | Savage Taurus | I think that some from loneliness |
17:37 | Savage Taurus | *comes |
17:37 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes- I think we all have experienced moments that seemed to overlap physical and virtual life. Once a fellow colleague on a SL project talked about a rough time she was having in rl. A group of about 6 of us (men/women) noticed that we had gathered - sitting and standing around her avatar.....very real moment. |
17:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Young Caine: How can strangers take on such importance to our souls? |
17:38 | Savage Taurus | in City Slickers, Curly said he fell in love with some woman he only saw in the distance once |
17:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Master Kan: Because our soul does not keep time, it merely records growth. |
17:38 | ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville) | Emile: Some enchanted evening You may see a stranger, you may see a stranger Across a crowded room And somehow you know, You know even then That somewhere you'll see her Again and again. source: https://www.lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/s/southpacificlyrics/someenchantedeveninglyrics.html |
17:39 | Valibrarian Gregg | perfect Thinkerer! theme song fits the story |
17:39 | Savage Taurus | yes Val, I find that people in SL are much more supportive than most other places on the internet |
17:40 | Valibrarian Gregg | Savage- I think the reason we connect well here is that social media and other online platforms are not "persistent"- they are more disposable (just scroll, click, delete). |
17:40 | Savage Taurus | true |
17:40 | Valibrarian Gregg | and that relates to Jake in the story.....he was looking for a deep connection |
17:41 | Maggie Larimore | wonderful Thinkerer |
17:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Here, we are also choosing those we wish to have around us, with the limits of proximity removed. |
17:41 | Savage Taurus | i remember when I was living alone, before the advent of online worlds, and read a book by a physicist and I emailed her to tell her my thoughts, and felt like we connected. But it really was just loneliness |
17:41 | Valibrarian Gregg | That doesn't mean it is always a "looking for love!" space--- but looking for real people to connect not just "brag about their edited lives" |
17:41 | Maggie Larimore | and Helen is looking for the same thing |
17:41 | Maggie Larimore | that connecton |
17:42 | Savage Taurus | haha true Val |
17:42 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes- they both connected bc they understood exactly what was needed |
17:42 | Valibrarian Gregg | and what they were seeking |
17:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And someone who treats her thoughts seriously. |
17:42 | Savage Taurus | yes |
17:42 | Valibrarian Gregg | Worsmith- this quote your shared really fits too: "Young Caine: Master, what is the best way to meet the loss of a loved one? Master Kan: By knowing that when we truly love, it is never lost... It is only after death that the depth of the bond is truly felt, and our loved one becomes more a part of us than was possible in life." |
17:43 | Valibrarian Gregg thinks that relates to the ending- which was quite satisfying | |
17:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It came to mind as I was thinking about the discussion. It's something I jotted down on a 3x5 notecard years back. |
17:44 | Savage Taurus | I also feel sad that she never found a love in her life better than someone who wrote to her when she was 21 |
17:44 | Valibrarian Gregg | Have any of you lost someone (through death) that you only knew here in SL? |
17:45 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes Savage - the story is sad but meaningful |
17:45 | Savage Taurus | I often think of people who I havent seen in SL for a while, hoping they are doing well |
17:45 | Valibrarian Gregg | I have been to a memorial for someone I worked with on many projects--- It was as real as real can be. |
17:45 | Miss Basque (berdaxagar) | No. |
17:45 | Valibrarian Gregg | She helped me learn SO much and was very kind to me. |
17:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Given the view of time expressed in the story, could Jake have taken it further? |
17:46 | Valibrarian Gregg | He felt that the 3rd drawer was his last chance/ |
17:46 | Maggie Larimore | I've been to a couple of those memorials, of people I only knew her, who had a big iimact on me |
17:47 | Maggie Larimore | I think in the short story format Finney limited what Jack was willing to do |
17:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Could he have mailed modern stamps to her? |
17:47 | Savage Taurus | I feel like they could have found other ways to continue communicating |
17:47 | Maggie Larimore | in Time and Again he's all in, totally immersed, the protagonists |
17:47 | Maggie Larimore | (his main characters tend to be a variation on Jake, on himself probably) |
17:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Would sending a modern penny to her, open a way for her to come forward in time (in the depth of night, of course) |
17:48 | ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville) | The limitation was par of the story |
17:48 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes- I suppose he could have added ways for them to communicate. But he did an excellent job getting me to "suspend my disbelief" in part by keeping it so simple. |
17:48 | Valibrarian Gregg | Thinkerer said it more concisely! |
17:48 | Maggie Larimore | and his belief that the three drawers were all they could do kept them from meeting |
17:48 | Maggie Larimore | but it was better for her and him probably |
17:49 | Valibrarian Gregg | Interesting question Wordsmith.....seems time travel usually involves some physical object? |
17:49 | Maggie Larimore | and it's wondeful thinking that she had a life that might have been fulfilling in its own way, and when she needed him she could open those drawers and read his words again |
17:50 | ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville) | To love pure and chaste from afar |
17:50 | Maggie Larimore | and that at some point, she reset her desk, to just the first letter, so that he found things in the right order maybe? |
17:50 | Savage Taurus | I can imagine a scene where after a long communication, one day Jake find the post office demolished |
17:50 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The stamps were important in getting things to here .... a letter had to be deliverable in her time and have an outside congruence with her time. |
17:50 | Valibrarian Gregg | Savage - you must like dystopian fiction lol |
17:50 | Savage Taurus | heh |
17:51 | Valibrarian Gregg | Thinkerer- pure and chaste from afar makes me think they neither ever found someone else- we will never know |
17:51 | Savage Taurus | I liked his description of the post office as being something mysterious that its own workers didnt fully understand |
17:52 | Savage Taurus | that letters would turn up decades later and the workers had no idea why |
17:52 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes yes- I liked the post office too! My dad was a mailman- and me a librarian- so I have told him we are both in "information science & info delivery" :) |
17:52 | Savage Taurus | heh |
17:52 | Valibrarian Gregg | and it makes me think of archival in the digital age- emails, etc- no more letters |
17:53 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, she was engaged already, but the annotation on her gravestone implies that she knew she was understood one time by at least someone. |
17:53 | ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville) | Also -- It is a writer's challenge to tell a story mostly in letters |
17:53 | Valibrarian Gregg | the archivist of the USA recently said the #1 challenge in the information age is changing formats- being able to keep important info available |
17:54 | Maggie Larimore | and that he would find her through time and probably by finding her grave, so I iimagine her living a full life with another type of love, children, grandchildren, but retaining that connection to him |
17:54 | Valibrarian Gregg | yes- She NEVER forgot |
17:54 | Maggie Larimore | and him too maybe, not necessarily alone, but still rememberng her, looking for her |
17:54 | Valibrarian Gregg | It was a bittersweet ending...the idea that he never knew her yet was never forgotten- |
17:55 | Savage Taurus | reminds me of a Kafka-esque novel or movie |
17:55 | Maggie Larimore | I agree |
17:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The ending touch me deeply. |
17:56 | Maggie Larimore | Finney does that, again kind of Hemingwayesque |
17:56 | Valibrarian Gregg | kind of an oxymoron in a way |
17:56 | Valibrarian Gregg | finding the most important thing and losing it at the same time |
17:56 | Maggie Larimore | he brings it home to a deep truth but almost unemotionally |
17:56 | Valibrarian Gregg | Wordsmith will be announcing next month's story soon! |
17:56 | Savage Taurus | I imagine her husband and children thought she was talking about them |
17:56 | Maggie Larimore | so the protagonist doesn't seem sappy but you feel it pretty deeply |
17:56 | Maggie Larimore | probably Savage |
17:57 | Valibrarian Gregg | This was an excellent discussion and I hope you enjoyed the "sense of presence" virtually :) |
17:57 | Maggie Larimore | pretty cool! |
17:57 | Savage Taurus | I really enjoyed this story |
17:57 | Valibrarian Gregg | The best way to keep informed about our next short story discussion (and book discussion) is one of the following: |
17:57 | Maggie Larimore | me too |
17:57 | Maggie Larimore | and it's one I hadn't read before |
17:57 | Maggie Larimore | so that was wonderful |
17:58 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And wonderful that you enjoyed the story (or found it meaningful ....) |
17:58 | Valibrarian Gregg | Pardon if this is a long list- but want you to connect in whatever way is good for you! |
